Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Help with re-homed GSD bitch?

Hi

I have a 3year old GSD dog which I re-homed 2 years ago. I had issues of over excitement, nervousness and disciline for the first few months but things gradually settled down. Now he is a very well behaved dog who at times is very playfull but at other times likes his own space and peace and quiet.

Last week I re-homed a 2 year old GSD bitch. the age is only an estimate but those who have seen her reckon she is very puppylike. I know it is only a week and I'm sure things will get better, but I am quite frustrated with her in the house. She doesn't settle for long and continually torments the older dog to play. She is extremely playfull and keeps prodding, jumping on and mouthing the other dog. At the moment she doesn't recognise her name or any command. She also parades round the room a lot with a toy in her mouth continually looking for attention.

She is responding to lead training very well but has issues with strangers in and outside of the home. Barks a lot then calms down once she knows they are not a threat. It is a very testing time but am prepared to make it work.

Has anyone got any suuggestions or avice on this one??

Sounds like she may be younger than you think.  this is typical juvenile behaviour and will improve if your boy puts his foot down, otherwise if it is only you the behaviour bothers then distraction training the only way to go, she has an active mind and needs to use it.  Once you have built some kind of relationship with her and have some relevance to her then you can start to teach her to chill too.

My current youngster at 15 months often provokes and pesters the others to play.  If they are not so inclined she eventually settles with a harrumph, or I will give her a hoof to chew, or have a game.  This is the ideal time for you to do some training (must be a great new game in her eyes).
