BBC1 now - feature about staffies coming up.

Positive! A bit sad though. Looked at how the popularity of Staffies has gone sky high over the last couple of years, and how the typical owner is now a young thugish type male using the dog solely as a status symbol/potential "weapon". Had a couple of people talking who have owned the breed for years (think one said 40 years) who spoke about how they make lovely family pets, but in the wrong hands are made to be aggressive through being taunted and pushed around or having other dogs set upon them. Also a couple of people from the RSPCA talking about the influx in rescue centers, often dumped because they're not aggressive enough, and about how people are breeding them indiscriminately. At the end they spoke about whether dog licensing should be brought back which will give dog wardens, police etc, the right to go up to anyone and ask to see papers and to charge them for every single day thereafter until they are able to produce them. Think that was about it! Nothing negative said about the breed itself.

Just watched it on bbciplayer this afternoon... oh heartbreaking, those Staffords eyes just bore straight through me from behind the bars of the cage...
I thought though, quite a positive programme, and to have someone of 'ilk' like Brian Sewell to present the piece was pretty good too...
I can see what they guy from the K9 magazine is saying about re-introducing dog licensing and registering every single pup that is ever born, but surely that's what responsible breeders/owners are doing anyway, I really dont think it's going to stop the stereotypical 'hard'man on the street...

My poor poor breed :-(

They also spoke of one breeder who has decided not to breed them anymore because people cross the street when they see her coming with her dogs, due to the bad image...

well thats really funny because i emailed the bbc, complaining bout casualty few weeks back, it was bout pit type dog. i complained because of us stafford owners getting grief over the breed already, they just made it worse, especially to ppl who dont no bull breeds, i cant dwell on it but that could have been why they put it on,,,,,

We have the same problems in Doncaster with idiots owning Staffies - I don't agree with the dog licencing/ownership suitability though simply because I don't trust politicians to do it properly. Maybe it would be simpler just to ban known druggies or criminals from owning any dog or pet.

A friend was bitten trying to separate a Staffy from her dog - when she reported it to the police and said she had taken a photo of the dog and owner, the police were not interested but told her to get rid of the photo as she was abusing the other owner's human rights. The world (or is it just the UK?) is crazy!!!

oh my god just watched it and cried my eyes out,i totally agree with the bloke who said about having a dog registration like you do a car its whether or not the goverment can be bothered to set it up. gonna give my staffy girl a big hug tonight wish i could give all the staffys without a home a big hug i'll be thinking of them though.xxxxxxxxxxxx

Such a shame, something needs to be done and sooner the better!!! :( 

i cant bring myself to watch it i dont want it play on my mind as we say, but i get the gist of it, i have a staff and she is so loving cant bear to think of other staffs being mistreated all they want is a lap to sit on a foot to rest their head on and someone to give them back the love they they give out, as all dogs do.

It is no point having any more laws as it is the enforcement of them that is the problem and those already around are not used properly.

Dogs are required to be registered in Northern Ireland, yet they have one of the worst stray dog problems and high rate of euthanasia.

In Ireland certain breeds (a large list of common breeds including Bull guarding/herding breeds) are required to be muzzled in public yet this is not enforced at all it would seem.

I know that friends with dobes visiting Ireland had bought muzzles for their dogs to comply with the law only to find it was openly flouted.

How many of the kind of peopel causign problems with their dogs are going to abide by any law relating to restricting them?  Who will suffer as a result, the dogs and the law abidign owner, with restrictions they do not need or deserve.
