Hi
I have a 13 week old Basset Hound male puppy. he is very loving and loves people and other dogs.
But just latley he has started growling at us and showing his teeth if we try to remove things from his mouth.
At the moment he has his baby teeth so we can cope with him but this might change when he gets his adult teeth.
He has lots of things to play with and nice walks but we must try to stop this aggresive behavour before it gets out of control.
Basset hounds are very hard to train any tips please.
thank you

Pick all the toys up and put them away, they are your toys not his, you paid for them. Give him one of two to play with and take them away frequently and say no loud & clear if he objects, if he lets you without complaint then you can give it back and praise. But don't tease. Use different toys each time you offer him a toy unless he has a special one in which case let him have that. Do try to change your feeling toward him, anything you give him food, toys, attention, is yours to give if you wish he has no rights to the toys, food or attention. Sure it will work within a short while only make sure every one treats him in the same way. Ja:)kie

Hi Carol

You may be starting off with the wrong attitude :)
<<Basset hounds are very hard to train >>

It may be hard to train a Bassett to do agilty but I am sure they can be trained to do something - especially basic good manners. Forget your pre-conceptions and think positive.

You can train this pup not to bite you, not to growl when you take something away, to come when called etc etc. Might take some work, but then, nothing really worth achieving is easy :)

Hi Carol. One of the most important lessons any dog can learn is to give things up when told. Reason one is that at some time in the future he may have something dangerous and being able to take it away from him could save his life! Reason two is that it is a good way of exerting YOUR authority.

Jackie's tips are all good stuff. On top of this I would start to get him use to having food taken away. Don't tease, only move it a few inches or pick it up for a second or so. I start of with a puppy by just not letting go of the food bowl straight away. Once this is accepted I’ll slide it an inch or two sideways. Over a period of time, as less and less notice is taken, I'll lift the bowl a few inches. This is all working up to the time that you can pick up the bowl at any time you want. Get your dog use to the command "Leave". Don’t allow him to even start eating until you tell him he can.

All of this is good "Control" exercises which as I said, could be a life saver in the future.

Regards, John
