When I used to take Molly training, the trainer recommended the hotdog sausages as treats because they're smelly & tasty, just cut up in pieces. No ill effects from Molly!

Have given them to mine, not had a problem with them. Did she say 'why' you shouldn't?

Maybe it has to do with the salt content?

I think it is because they are in brine (salt).  You can always buy the ones from the fridge/deli counters, they have the advantage of being a bit firmer to cut up for training treats too.

Hi Missie, She didn't say why. I asked but just said she'd heard it somewhere!? :-)

Hi Sandrah, Yes thats probably why!

I've bought dog hot dogs from the pet supermarket before which have had all the ingredients listed but not supermarket ones as the ingredients tend not to be very specific - just had a quick Google and this link says that hot dogs can contain herbs and seasonings including garlic, pepper, ground mustard, nutmeg, salt, and onion.

Need to check the ingredients carefully and avoid any that list "herbs and seasonings" then! Maybe that's what she was talking about.

Thank You Zarah. :-)

To be honest without seasoning hot dogs woudl be inedible.  A bit of seasonign will do the dogs no ahrm in treats, but the salt is to be avoided.

I was thinking of the onion..?

I don't think the small amount of onion in a bit of hot dog would be enough to do any harm.  As others have said, I think salt is the issue, buit again if small bits of hot dog are used occasionally for training, I think all will be well.

Ha Ha this reminds me of a lady who brought a TT puppy to my Puppy Good Citizen class and on the first exercise I gave her puppy a tiny bit of Pork sausage..... she was horrified " you musn't give dogs pork". I asked why.  She said " everyone knows that - I was told by my sister"  Luckily her sister was there with her for company so I asked her why " oh I heard it somewhere and everyone know it anyway".
Well I didn't..... the handler was training her first ever dog and her sister had never owned a dog!
Everyone's an expert!
