My dog is 9 years old nearly and we had her spayed nearly 2 years ago.  She has a couple of times in the last 2 weeks when she has jumped of the sofa to bark at something going past completely lost her bladder control and urinated everywhere.  Is this normal for a spayed bitch of this age or could it be a infection?  This is a lot of urine not a leaking.  She has also been coughing a lot of late but the vet couldnt find anything wrong when we investigated.  I am going to pop her to vet but cant get there until Friday.  She doesnt seem in any pain.

Sorry to here your old girl having problems. I have a old girl. You said she been coughing alot she may of  done one cough to many and strained herself abit. Did the vet check the cough out for Kennel cough?

I would suspect it is stress incontinence, but the bladder happened to be full, ti is most likely due to the lack of hormones making the muscles weak.

A trip to the Vet is needed anyway where he can check for an infection.

There are two drugs used for spay incontinence.  Both of which may cause attractiveness to males as a side effect, one more than the other.  Sometimes they don't work, but I have known several Dobe bitches on treatment who did well (seems to be common for spay incontinence in that breed).

My dog was 18 months when she was spayed and some time later (can't remember exactly but think about 9 months) she developed incontinence. The first time I noticed it was when she emptied her bladder all over the floor whilst asleep and she seemed quite shocked when I woke her and she saw it.  I noticed after that little spots of urine here and there. She was diagnosed with spay incontinence and now takes a hormone supplement daily to keep it under control.  The supplement does work although occasionally I still find the odd spots of urine.

Hope this helps.

We went to the vets and he thinks she may have got a infection.  She has got some antibiotics and will play it by ear.

She definately hasnt got kennel cough and this cough only happens when she cant get her own way namely she cant get on the sofa so we think it is attention seeking.  Its been going on for over 7 months now and the vet said everything is functioning fine.
