Couldnt hold my tounge today.  One of the girls at work has three small jack russells, she has jsut bought herself a covertable (astra).  I asked how she was going to transport her three dogs and three kids?  She said she only travels to her mums house which is a straight, hour and a half away, so she has a small crate in the boot where the dogs would be safe as it is only a short ride and she would stop half way to check on them.  Well, I couldnt hold it in I had a go at her and asked how the dogs would get air etc and how would she know they are alright.  She replied with that her mum had done this for years with her four little dogs and her car has a huge boot when the roof aint down!

I was telling a neighbour tonight and they said, ah well if its only and hour and a half they will be fine.

Is it just me or do you think this is stupid, or am i being out of term with her and maybe I should appologise?

Hi, I would be very concerned if I knew someone that transported their dogs in an enclosed boot of a car!!
perhaps suggest to her that she put herself in the boot of her new car for an hour and a half and see how she feels after the all deal!

Well said Gemini05

i think its all wrong myself, i worry when my 2 dogs are just in the car, let alone the boot, she needs reporting. i mean if it was only ten minutes then it wouldn't bee so bad but that is a hell of a long time

I know this isnt helpful but couldnt you ask her to travel an hour and a half in the boot herself and see how she feels?

Or she could leave her kids in the boot and see how they feel  well after all she is prepared to put the dogs in the boot.

Or you could report her to the RSPCA as this is an unsuitable way for a dog to be treated.

I know dogs are dogs and not people but they should still be treated with respect and care.  Infact I would say stick her in the boot for 48 hours and see what she thinks then!

Hi guys

Thats what I thought, I spoke to her again to tell her about the dangors etc but she just said back... "well people transport dogs all over the counrty in the back of enclosed vans with no light etc."  Lost for words
- By Astarte Date 25.03.08 13:15 UTC
do they? who? if shes meaning the vans used by breeders the ones i've looked at have had a window bitty thing to the front that lets in light and through which the driver can see them. if its anywhere near as enclosed as that then they have a problem to

How frustrating for you! Especially when you have approached her about it because you are concerned for the welfare of her dogs. How can she think putting dogs in the boot is the same as putting it a van used by the RSPCA or dog teams for example? Those vehicles have been modified with the welfare of the dogs being the priority, very different to putting them in a cage (probably unsecured so it can slide around) in the boot of a car. I would seriously think about reporting her because I'm far as I'm concerned she is not caring for those dogs properly by transporting them in such an irresponsible and potentially dangerous way!

Good luck with whatever you decide to do, I hope you finally get her to see sense.

A bit stupid of me, but is a boot a trunk of a car?  or is it something else?
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 25.03.08 18:36 UTC
Umm??  I have a van, there is a window at the back and windows all around the front!!

then I dont like what she is doing!  poor pups!  how coukl anyone think thats ok?????? (soryy, one handed typing, other hand on the phone with my sis, so no caps basically)

Surely this should be covered by the Animal Welfare Act that was passed in April 2007.  People are now answerable for the welfare of their pets.  DEFRA website should have the full legislation, but it is called A DUTY TO CARE.  We are required to protect pets from pain, suffering, injury and disease.  Legislation requires us to provide a suitable environment and diet, and that the animal is allowed to behave normally.   I don't see being locked in a boot as a suitable environment.

I would have thought this would be illegal??

I know dogs should be crated or have suitable restraints so as not to cause any distraction to the driver, but the boot of a car??!! Words fail me...
- By Rach85 [gb] Date 28.03.08 09:04 UTC
That is a terrible thing to hear, what if they had a crash? The dogs wouldnt stand a chance, I would have given her a good earfull if it was me.

I heard of my breeder that she had heard of people keeping their litter of puppies in a closed oven!!! Some people are truly disgusting.
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 28.03.08 09:09 UTC
What on Earth would posess someone to put a llitter of puppies in an oven??!
- By Rach85 [gb] Date 28.03.08 09:15 UTC
Disgusting isnt it?
She said it was her friend who went to see a litter, the owner opened the oven after walking her through and there they all were  I would have taken them all there and then along with the dam and called the RSPCA.

Some people really make my blood boil.
