I've just bought a chest freezer, which is due to be delivered on Wednesday.  I desperately need it despite not having much room as the dogs are now on BARF.  However, I have heard that some people keep theirs outside covered by a tarpaulin.  It would be fantastic if this was possible as it would solve the space problem and it would mean that the meat supplier could chuck the meat in the freezer even if he delivered if I was at work.

What I really want to know is, has anyone stored their freezer outside and if so, how did it go?

Hi, I keep mine outside but its in the shed and theres no door!!!   I find that it does get condensation on it  in winter which starts to go mouldy if I don't wipe it off regularly !!!! This one is 2 years old, but the last one was out there for 7 years ( only packed up cos it was 20 yrs :) )

When I started feeding BARF I bought a cheap second hand upright freezer from an ad in the paper.  When I went around to collect it, I found that the guy had been keeping it outside under a tarpaulin as you describe.  The freezer was a few years old and in good nick.  It obviously did the freezer no harm at all as it is still in use here (but inside now) more than two years on.  Not sure about how you go about connecting it safely to an electric socket, preventing cables getting wet etc though?

I used to keep mine in the shed, but I don't think I'd be happy with it out in the open, even if it was covered by tarpaulin. What happens when it rains? Surely the electrics would get fried :-( The tarpaulin would need to be tied down very well indeed with the winds we are having today.

My mum keeps one in the garage which isn't heated.  She's had it there for years and there's been no problem.

That's what worrying me, Lindylou.  Am worried that one of us (me!) will end up getting fried while I'm getting dog food out!! :O

Think I'll have to find space for it in the garage aaagggghhhhh!

We've got a freezer outside. We needed to as there was no room in our place for a freezer to go. We drilled a hole into the window frame & fed the lead through & plugged it in (lucky for us the plug point is right there) & then we threw one of those bulider merchants bags over it....it has kept it dry, clean & safe for nearly two years now & it is so handy for extra food. Hope this helps. :)

That sounds hopeful :).  Will have to give it a bit more thought - well, and try to chuck some stuff out of the garage!!

What about getting on of those green/cream plastic boxers from one of the DIY stores.

We have a Caravan in Wales, an lots of people (me included)  have them, many store washing machines and freezers in theirs , plumed in of cause.

I have had mne for a few yrs, now, they dont let any water in, and aesthetically look much nicer than a tarpaulin thrown over them

Whoops, hadn't even thought about one of those!!!

I have a fridge/freezer in  the garage and recently due to moving house purchased a new fridge freezer, whilst at John Lewis, the sales asst was saying that nowadays freezers are not meant to be placed outside/in the garage as the use different gases which do not properly gauge the temp and may cause new appliances to break down. Not exaclty sure of the terminology she used but I was surprised as I have had one for 7 yrs and had no probs but she said that as it was that old it would be ok as it would use different gases !
