Topic Dog Boards / Health / Ulcer on tongue?

Just wondering if dogs get ulcers on their tongues.  Salty's got a funny red and white circle on the tip of his tongue, had it for a couple of weeks.  We thought he'd just bitten it but it's not improving, the vet didn't know what it was but just said to keep an eye on it since to find out more, he'd have to have a wedge of tongue cut out :(.  Just wondering if anyone else has had this, hope it's nothing nasty!  (He's only 13 months so vet said unlikely but still....)

They can, yes. In cats it's usually a viral problem causing mouth ulcers, in dogs it tends to be more of a case of the dog having licked something that burnt the tongue. One of my bitches would always get ulcers on her tongue (and once on the roof of her mouth as well) after she'd given birth and had licked the pups and eaten the afterbirths! My vet never understood why, but it happened each time she had a litter. It did heal within a few weeks but not as long as she was still cleaning up poo from them. Anything in the mouth of course can take quite a while to heal. So can you think of any way he could have licked something odd? Maybe even just on the ground during a walk?

Please keep an eye on it and check the rest of the mouth and throat to make sure none appear in there.  I am not trying to scare or worry you as the chances are very slim indeed but I had two little CKCS who had Auto Immune disease which caused ulceration in the mouth or throat.
It is more likely that your dog has bitten his tongue and because it was sore keeps playing with delaying healing time.
If it gets any bigger or anymore appear then I would get them checked out.

Thanks for the replies, can't think of anything funny he's eaten but he is rather a scavenger so maybe I haven't noticed....  will keep an eye on it and the rest of his mouth.
