Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / PUPPY ON A LEAD!
- By Jessie02 [gb] Date 02.10.02 15:44 UTC
My puppy is 12 weeks old and we're introducing her to a lead. She wasn't at first but now I think she's got used to it. The only problem is, that she keeps on grabbing it with her teeth and ahe'll work with it most of the time, only if shes got it in her mouth. I'm sure all puppies do this, but I know dogs that haven't got out of the habit. Is a CHAIN LEAD a good idea, I've heard that it can bang them on the nose and stuff, but all the dogs I know have them.

If you have any suggestions I'd be happy to have them!

Thanx

Chain could damage the pups teeth & mouth, try diverting her attention with a food treat or a toy, if food only just a tiny one, move it forward so she has to take a few steps and praise her. Don't work on any training for too long not even walking on the lead, plenty of time for that but if you can pick her up put on the collar and lead, pick her up and walk up the road a short way and then back. Then when she can be walked on the pavement you can do the same route with her and avoid her being too scared to walk. Ja:)kie

hi there,

Yes, it would seem they all bite their leads....I'm doing 3 minutes a day and just encourage him to follow me, while his lead drags behind, hoping he'll forget he's wearing it.....My parents have a 3 year old lab, who will always walk with the lead in her mouth on the way home, very endearing really, but I will train mine as a worker so not so endearing!
