My bitch was mated on 4th & 6th march and today has snotty colour discharge i have just got back from the vets i am really worried about her they have put her on synulox for 7 days which they said would be safe for pups but if this is the start of pyo has anyone had bitch that has responded to the treatment and continued with a healthy pregnancy and a litter of pups at the end or does it usually end in a spay?

i want whats best for my bitch and don't know if it would be best to just ask for her to be spayed my bitch comes first always

Thanks

Benson, years gone by when breeders didn't have access to modern technology we have nowadays such as scans etc, they relied on many methods to detect pregnancy, one of these was a clear stringy discharge from the bitch, I had never experienced it before but my youngest bitch on her first pregnancy had strings of it continually from her vulva about week 3 gestation.  took her to the vet just to be 100% sure that this wasn't anything serious. Hopefully this may be the same with your bitch and it's a sign of in whelp.
Is your girl well in herself? What exactly does your vet say it is? and finally does the discharge smell? I hope this isn't a pyo, there are 2 types of pyo, open and closed, the open pyo is where the matter is expeled from the uterus as the cervix remains open, a closed pyo the uterus fills with pus and it has no escape. A closed pyo is very dangerous and life threatening for the bitch.  Fingers crossed for your girl & hope there is a happy outcome

Did they take a swab, if not go back and get one if possible. My girl had a yellowy discharge about a week or two after being mated last year, and was on Synulox, then they swabbed again to make sure the infection was gone and found now it was a different infection that needed stronger antibiotics. Of course I was certain she wouldn't be pregnant after all that going on, and when I had her palpated at 4 weeks I was astounded to hear the vet say she could feel at least two puppies. Sure enough, she had 2 big healthy puppies, now nearly 4 months old. So don't despair just yet - ask your vet about pyo, just to be sure they are considering the possibility, but if it's just an infection somewhere near the vulva rather than right up in the uterus, there's still hope! :-)

the discharge is not stringy but creamy this morning it dropped on the floor and looked very slightly geenish and thick but i check her again before the vet check and it looked more white and thiner. the vet would not confirm pyo but did say that the discharge was not wright for pregnancy, she did scan her and thought she saw 1 pup but i said it was a bit early as she is only just two weeks in so she has asked for her to come back in one week to be scaned by the top vet

i dont want to risk my bitch she is not just my baby but my kids would be devistated if we lost her

sorry forgot to say they did not take any swabs and she is well in her self

Benson

My bitch had this discharge until about 6 weeks into her pregnancy but went on to give birth to five healthy pups.  Obviously you need to be sure and get the necessary checks done to be sure.  I read somewhere that a discharge at around 3 weeks is also quite normal though.  I can't remember where exactly but if I'm not mistaken it has something to do with the white blood cells cleaning the uterus.  My vet also told me that it is important that the discharge doesn't smell.  He put her on a course of synolux for 7 days just to be on the safe side.

One of my girls bled from season to whelping, stayed on Synulox for the whole 9 weeks of pregnancy and gave birth to 7 healthy pups!

Sounds like what happened to my girl:

http://www.champdogsforum.co.uk/board/topic/101850.html

she had 9 healthy pups by c-section.

Hope things carry on being well,
Aimi

Sounds to me like you bitch is pregnant.     The most obvious sign of a pyo is drinking water quite rapidly and often then throwing it back up.
- By benson67 Date 19.03.08 10:38 UTC
she is not drinking any more water than normal and last night was playing with my male so defenatly not off colour this morning there is no sign of any discharge so i feel better today if it was the start of an infection the synulox has sorted it she went straight to the vets as soon as i saw it so i think early enough to stop any more problems finger crossed

thank you for all you replys and good to know that she should carry on with healthy whelp

Thank you everyone

Sounds just like normal pregnancy discharge to me!  Can't tell without seeing it of course.  Fingers crossed that all goes well.

well i thought the discharge had cleared yesterday but it has not. she eat well last night but will picks in the mornings.

she seems well in herself but the discharge is defiantly snotty green in colour and there is more of it now she is not drinking excessively she has now had five syulox tablets how long do you think it will take for them to start working i don't know whether to take her back to the vets today or give it another day to start working?

Hi Benson,

I would take her back to the vets even if it is just to put your mind at rest. I hope the outcome is good.x
- By CALI2 [de] Date 20.03.08 07:57 UTC
If she was mine I would be taking her straight back to be on the safe side.

good news i think so far the vet said that there is no smell that would be associated with pyo and that pyometra courses a discharge that is yellow/orange in colour from blood tinge and hers is light green they have taken blood sample to check the white cells and the results will be back around 2.30pm.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 20.03.08 14:29 UTC
Green would still suggest some infection but not perhaps uterine but bladder, as in vaginitis.
- By benson67 Date 20.03.08 14:40 UTC
yes brainless it is vaginitis i have just spoken to the vets and they have confirmed that the blood results came back normal so to carry on with the ab and she will be scanned next Tuesday and they will check everything again.
- By AlisonGold [gb] Date 20.03.08 14:44 UTC
Vaginitis is quite common after a mating. Good luck for the scan.

Good Luck!

Thank you all

The good thing about this site is that you can come on here and get some very good advise and get reassurance it makes you feel so much better being able to talk to everyone.
most of my friend don't understand as they either don't have dog or are just pet owners that do not do training breeding or showing and they don't understand how i worry about my dogs.
i do have a mentor but its good to have more than one opinion about things we all have something to learn and something to give

so thank you all whether it just be a good luck or some much need advise

thank you

What does the pyo discharge smell like, if it can be described?
- By Lea Date 24.03.08 19:23 UTC
Gemmas didnt smell. I left her in the morning after thinking she wasnt right but couldnt put my finger on it, came back later and there was diorreah all over the kitchen floor and when I lifted her tail up alot of creamy discharge came out. thats how I knew but there was no smell.
But all caeses are different.
Gemmas was open pyo. I have no idea on closed.

Thanks Lea, Helpful as ever! :-)

Dont take my experience as gospel as I believe Gemma had extreme symptoms.
If anyone is ever worrie about Pyo then see a vet.
As it was I knew something was not right with Gemma for 2 days before she showed the symptoms I decribed, but i couldnt work out what was wrong as it was only small symptoms and I put iot down to packing as I was moving. and I think thats what vets would have put it down to.
But Pyo both types is a bad infection and the quicker diagnosed the quicker treated/spayed.
One thing I did notice for a week before she was spayed mt neutered dog that had not worried her at all in the 2 years I had had him, got very interested in her as if he was still entire!!!!

My girl had Pyo last July,
I started to notice something was wrong 3 weeks after she had been mated.
Gemini started drinking loads of water, and I mean loads, and she also started peeing in the house, very unlike her, and her pee was like bucket loads more then a normal large dog pee.

When I examined her I noticed a creamy-orange-light brown discharge seeping from her vulva, not a nice experience at all.
now I can cope with most smells and soils, but the smell from her back end was horrible, I can only describe it as a mixture of diah (runny poo) smell and like a strong irony smell, I really felt quite sick trying to clean her up.
Gemini had Closed and Open Pyo according to the vet, we took her straight to the vet the morning we noticed the discharge and she had a ultrasound and we could see her whole uterus full of the horrid puss, she had a high blood preasure and a very high temperature.
The vet strongly recommended a emergency Spay, but would have to put her on a drip before they could proceed.
It must have been about 7pm before they felt she was stable enough to have the operation, and thankfully everything went well.
Some people I spoke to about this who's bitches had had Pyo said that Gemini's symptoms were very extreme, and that some mild cases of Pyo can be treated with Antibiotics and other remedies, but I felt that Gemini's life depended on the emergency spaying and I have never regretted signing the consent form.
Gemini is doing well now, I do still watch over her more then I used to, but she is a healthy soon to be 4 year old girl and has put on a bit of weight since the spay, but we have cut her food down.

My advice to anyone that thinks their dog may be unwell is to have it checked out by a vet, our dogs depend on us to do the right thing for them. xx
