Topic Dog Boards / General / How do I find more about a pedigree and KC?
- By Gemini05 Date 17.03.08 16:08 UTC
My friend recently homed a Gundog breed, he is about 11 months old.
She has a pedigree certificate that has a KC Reg number on it but no actual KC name for her dog??
I have tried a internet search to see if I can find out more about this dogs background but with no results.

She doesn't have a KC reg certificate, I have told her to ask for it from the peopl she had the dog from, but really doesn't know much about KC's and Pedigrees.

Can I somehow find out more about this dog?

Try the Kennel club, if he is registered ( I assume it's his reg No and not one of the parents)they will have a record of him.

Thanks Merlot, I did think of that but wondered whether the Kennel Club would pass on any info regarding the dog as IF he is KC registered, my friend has not signed anything to say she is the new owner and it looks like the people that she had the dog off are none the wiser either!!!

I have the name of the breeder but can't find anything about his kennel on the internet and have tried to call but no such number. The plot thickons!
According to the pedigree there are FTCH in his line so I would have thought I would find something about it!

Gemini, do you want to PM me the breed, and the KC reg no... I might be able to track it,
- By Pedlee Date 17.03.08 16:28 UTC
What breed is the dog in question? Some breeds have pedigree databases, so if the parents names, DOB etc are known you might be able to track him that way.

Hmmm, I thought a KC certificate was the dogs pedigree!!!  Its all I got when I bought my pup-so was I supose to get a pedigree certificate to?

A pedigree is just what it says on the tin! a list of your dogs ancestors, be they pure bred or not! A mongrel has a pedigree like you and I do, it's just a list of names.  Only the pure bred registered dogs who have been registered with the kennel club are eligible for registration of their progeny. You should get a registration certificate with your puppy and to register it in your name you need to fill out the back and pay the fee (£12) to the kennel club to change it into your ownership.

Oxford English dictionary: Pedigree a recorded line of descent.
Aileen

Edited to say: The dictionary also says: a pure bred domestic or pet animal...mmm, not strictly true!

>was I supose to get a pedigree certificate to?

Yes - at least a 3-generation pedigree listing your dog's ancestors.
- By Gemini05 Date 17.03.08 17:14 UTC
Its a Labrador, been searching on net and found info about some of the Great Grandperants but still can't find much else, puzzled!!
I don't know much about Labs I m afraid if it was my own breed then I would know who to call!!!

I didnt get one, I did the change of owner thing for £12 and the breeder had a framed family tree type thing with names in red and black but I didnt get a pedigree listing or a copy of that.  I thought I could pay extra to KC to get one-is that the case or should I automatically have been given one?
- By kayc [gb] Date 17.03.08 17:42 UTC
typical.. BRS for this date not included.. checking subsequent.. but now I have the parents names.. I can put a full pedigree together for you, so at least you know background of the pup ;)
- By Angelz [in] Date 17.03.08 17:43 UTC
so can a mongrel be kc reg then?
- By kayc [gb] Date 17.03.08 17:44 UTC
Hi Angelz.. normally , but not always, the breeder will give a 3 or 5 gen pedigree with pup.. I print out a 5 gen for my pups... but you can pay extra to the KC to get the type of pedigree you have just mentioned.. not sure of cost.. but look at the back of you KC reg..it will list prices out for you...

>the breeder had a framed family tree type thing with names in red and black

That's the pedigree. You should have been given a copy, either hand-written or printed. You can certainly pay extra to the KC for a posh one, but you shouldn't have to.

>so can a mongrel be kc reg then?

Only on the Activities register so that it can take part in competitive agility or obedience.

Thanks Kayc, will PM you.

But how would my friend go about signing the dog over to her name with no KC reg paper?
And no Kennel name for her dog apart from the KC Reg No?
- By kayc [gb] Date 17.03.08 19:30 UTC
She really will need the KC reg papers to do this.. however you now have his name.. date of birth.. parents details and KC reg no... phone the KC.. I know what they wil say.. but no harm in trying...

Is your friend still in touch with previous owners.. did they actually get a KC reg form.. if not breeder may still have it.. now you have his name too ;-) so may be worth getting in touch with him.. I think he might like to know where his pup is too :)

In Response to Angelz

When you buy a puppy you should receive a registration certificate and a pedigree.  the pedigree can be hand written using a proforma, printed if the breeder has a computer, or produced by the Kennel club for a fee (which the breeder should pay) and then passed onto you.  Our breed club require breeders to give a five generation pedigree with pups.

I have always done my own as I like to put hip scores on mien and the KC only include that of the parents on reg form, and do not include foreign results.

Also I begrudge paying the KC for a coloured one when I can do just as well myself.

I wish our KC would do what they do in FCI countries and have the pedigree printed on the Registration document usually four generations as they have the parent listed at the top so the bottom half starts with grandparents.

Our reg forms have acres of blank space that could be used and also use a clearer bolder font.  Seems they want to charge for registration, then transfer and pedigrees on top.

I think some dog rescues hold back on giving the KC papers to new owners to prevent them from bredding etc. If the dog was a rescue dog from the people your freind got it from maybe this might be the reason why there is no paperwork.
- By Gemini05 Date 18.03.08 13:26 UTC
have given my friend all of the Info that you kind CD's have passed on to me, and a big thanks the Kayc.

As far as she is aware, the people she had the dog off, did not get the KC reg Certificate either, so she is going to find out more about it and contact the breeder I think.
She sadly is not interested in doing any thing with her dog, apart from love and care for him as a pet dog.  which I understand as she was merely just looking to give a dog a home and loves Labs!!!
