Hi all.
I have a 16 month old CKC and for the past two weeks he had barely eaten anything. He is obviously hungry as I can hear his tummy rumbling, and he tries to get into the dustbins and steal from our plates. We have had him since March, and he used to be such a good little eater. We haven't recently changed his food (Pedigree kibble). When we are out walkies, he strains to try and do a toilet, but with barely any food going through him, it's not surprising he can't do anything. Could there be a blockage or something that is causing him to do this? I am getting a bit worried about him. Also, we think he may have had a little blood in one of his stools caused by the straining.
Any ideas?

As this has been going on for 2 weeks I think you should have him examined by a vet.

I would go to vet as he seems to be hungry also 2 weeks is quite a long time

I'm a quick typer Anne :D
If he tries to steal from your plates have you tried putting some of your meal into his dish just to test whether he's got a problem actually eating or whether he's just gone off his own food ?
He might have something wrong with his teeth or gums if he is unwilling to eat any kind of food.
Otherwise perhaps a change from the Pedigree Kibble might do the trick, or even just adding something tasty to it.
I agree that perhaps it would be worth getting your vet to check him over for peace of mind.
Best wishes

Well, he had no trouble wolfing down one of my husband's cheese rolls! :o)
Also, he tries to get to my pup's puppy food.
Maybe he could do with a change in food, but I'm worried that this will only upset his tummy even more.
Perhaps you could try him with something bland first, like chicken and rice, which, as well as getting some nourishment into him, should also help to settle his tummy.

You may not have changed his food but I wonder if the ingredients have changed in any way which may explain why he has gone off it.
Maybe if you contact the manufacturer they would tell you about any changes also have a look at the packaging to see if it says anything about new improved recipe. It couldn't have been contaminated in any way damp or something have a sniff and see what you think. I remember years ago a new complete food came out and I had been using it no problems then my dogs got picky, I got it via a friend and they got a call from the supplier to say bin what you have and come in for replacement of last order. When I looked at the food at the bottom of the bag it was crumbly much more than usually. I think myself that something had gone wrong with the ingredients preservatives weren't doing job. Also found that friends dogs were reluctant to eat it

Or another possibility is he had a couple of days with a loss of appetite due to something or other and has found this leads to things like cheese sandwiches etc, worth holding out for don't you think ;) :)

I also wonder if it's linked to the new puppy you have - is attention being diverted to the puppy so the older one is trying other tactics to secure your attention?
If he has been like this for two weeks - has he lost weight? If not - then he must be getting food from somewhere thus satisfying his hunger and negating the need for him to eat his normal food. If he can trick you into giving him other stuff by not eating what's down - he will:D

When my new pup arrived, she managed to get into Ben's dish once and decided she preferred his food, and Ben decided he didn't like any food. As he's a really fussy eater and far from overweight he couldn't afford to not eat. I managed to hand-feed him, well away from the pup, and he would take that. When the pup grumbled at her crate in the kitchen one evening we found Ben had discovered puppy food, and now has to have some of that with his own before he'll even look at his food. I changed the pup onto the puppy version of Burns so they were eating virtually the same and things are beginning to settle down into a routine. Ben probably has more to eat than he used to now, which is no bad thing in his case.
Good luck, whatever it turns out to be.

I would have him checked by a vet, just to be sure. This sort of thing is not unusual in a teenage lad, there isn't a bitch in season around is there, some time they don't even have to be in season to have this effect on a young man. Ja:)kie
