ok, so while trying to find out where the dogs in "The Queen" are from because of another post, i came across this:

"The Queen also introduced a new breed of dog known as the "dorgi" when one of her Corgis was mated with a dachshund named Pipkin, which belonged to Princess Margaret."

surely not?? i always understood her to be very passionate about her breeds (apparently she got her first corgi at 18, called Susan and most of the ones she has now are her products of her offspring)

As far as I am aware, the Dorgi was an accidental cross initially, between the Queen's Corgi and Princess Margaret's Daschund

but appears to have been continued...

From various thing I have read about the "dorgis " over the years I understand the first litter were accidental, but subsequent litters have also been produced - however, all pups are either kept by "the family" or given to members of the Royal household.  I think they were impressed and fond of the originals, and decided to keep the cross going.  However, hardly like the "Designer"breeders, doing for the ££££s.  Purely supposition, but given the snippets published about the Royal corgis being partial to the odd bite or two, perhaps the addition of the Dachsie blood into the mix may have come as a relief to many of the servants etc?

Certainly the Queen had and 'oops litter', and laughingly named them Dorgi's but she certainly has not tried to popularise this as they have been around years before the current cross breeding fad.

i was kidding in the title! not sure the queens popular enough now to be honest that she could start a fad... must say though that the drawing i saw of it it was a nice looking dog.
