Topic Dog Boards / Health / Bonnie poorly
- By Hamster [gb] Date 12.03.08 11:56 UTC
Just an update on Bonnie who was spayed last week. She was doing really well for the first couple of days then she stopped eating and has had diarrhoea but no vomiting and has been really down. Called in for some prokolin on mon evening, but she was no better so took her in to vets yesterday. Of course she bounced in , wagging away as if there was nothing wrong! Her tummy is soft and she's not showing any discomfort but she had a temperature so she was started on antibiotics.
She was really flat this morning, tail between her legs, not at all smily. So off we went to the vets again.
He has asked to keep her in (temp ok today but something obviously not right) He said they have a quiet day so he will let her potter around and try her with a bit of food etc and he would observe her and would do some bloods. He said that if she gets too sad he will ring me to come and get her, otherwise to ring later and i can probably bring her home.
It's just so horrible seeing a young dog poorly and sad!
Sorry but just needed to tell someone what's happened

I really hope she recovers quickly, I know how concerned you must be feeling for her (my bitch Honey was recently spayed too and it was a worry)
Hoping you get her back home today feeling better.

I hope the vet finds out the problem quickly.  I had my two spayed beginning of December last year and I can only imagine how worried you are.  My eldest girl suffered for at least a week after the op but it was because she was sore rather than anything else but I was still really concerned for her.

Poor Bonnie :(
I hope she is feeling better soon.

The vet has just phoned. Her blood tests to check liver, kidneys etc are ok but her red blood cells are a bit down and white cells up. He wants to keep her on the same antibiotics but is adding some herbal medications to try to boost her immunity. If she doesn't improve in the next 24 hours or so then he will consider an ultrasound but he said at the moment he doesn't feel she is poorly enough to put her through that.
I asked if she had lost much blood during her op and he said that she hadn't and it all went really well.
So i'm off to pick my girl up and see how we go!

Just catching up with this Hamster - everything crossed that your girl is feeling much better soon :)  At least you've been really on the ball with her and thankfully sound to have a very caring and committed Vet on side - makes a huge difference, doesn't it!

Gentle hugs to Bonnie from me when she's back in your arms.
Teri x

thanks for all your good wishes. I've got Bonnie back home now. She was trotting around behind the counter with one of the nurses when I went in and the vet said she'd sat in on a castration as well! She'll want to go back everyday!
Anyway she's been down the garden and chewed a bit on a stick and is now back in by my feet as I type. She is to have Mycoplex Coriolusx3 a day and Aloe Vera gel 40 mls mixed in with food as well as her antibiotics. Not easy when she's not really eating!
I've just bought some liver to see if she might fancy a bit of that later mixed with a bit of rice.
Has anyone used these tabs/gel before? Apparently they help boost immunity so I am about to google them to see what I can find

Just thought I'd give an update on Bonnie.
She's still a poorly girl. She hasn't picked up at all, though is no worse. Took her back to vet last night as still no improvement. He gave her an injection of another antibiotic in conjunction with the one she's already on and booked an appointment for 2nd opinion and ultrasound scan this morning.
I spent nearly 3 hrs in the vet hospital while she had 2 scans and various bloods.
Basically, everything with the spaying seems fine but she has a massive inflammatory response to something. There is  a bit of a question mark about part of her duodenum that has a bit of a loop and a small fluid collection, but no sign of a foreign body or obstruction.
she has had another antibiotic injection and a steroid injection and is seeing my own vet tomorrow for another check.
The general feeling is that we wait and see. They don't want to operate as they don't really know what the problem is. (unless she begins to vomit then they may operate to see what's going on.)
All her other organs are fine apparently.
We were due to go away on Mon but unless she starts to pick up then i won't be going anywhere!

Oh dear, poor Bonnie.
I have my fingers crossed for you. I do hope she starts to perk up soon, or the vets discovers the problem so they can help more. You must be out of your mind with worry at the moment, especially not knowing the exact cause.

Wishing her a speedy recovery x x

Just to let you know that Bonnie seems to be on the mend. Still don't really know what was wrong but her temp is down, she's lively and interested and is now taking 3 small meals a day. I will try her back on her usual 2 meals tomorrow and see how she gets on. She's on antibiotics for another 4 days. It was such a scare because she was so flat and unwell, and didn't eat more than a little bit of chicken from my hand for a week, and for a few days would only lap water from my hand!
I've postponed my trip away until wednesday so that I'm sure she's eating normally before she goes to stay with her mum for a few days over Easter.
Thanks for all your good wishes when she was so poorly.
I'm off down to the vets tomorrow with a tin of biscuits for them cos they were all so kind to me and her!
