Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Chappie for King Charles Cavalier

My puppy is one next month. He has had a bit of mucus blood in his stools last week , but otherwise seems fine. The vet reccomended rice or pasta for two days to see if it went away, which it did, but has come back again today. Shpuld I try the rice again for two days and if he is okay after that, change his diet from pedigree complete puppy to Chappie gradually? Or is he too young yet?

>change his diet from pedigree complete puppy

I definitely agree with getting him off of Pedigree. The symptoms you describe seem to be typical of pedigree fed dogs :(
You may not even need to feed chappie, there are plenty of decent foods out there, before going down the chappie route.

>Or is he too young yet?

He's not too young to change foods, especially not since it doesn't seem to be agreeing with him anyway.

Hi. I am a Cavalier owner and Agree with Ktee - get him off the pedigree. I feed my two Arden Grange, I changed Harvey over to it at around 6 months old and Alfie has had nothing else - its a fantastic food and the only thing that doesn't upset Alfies tummy. Chappie is a good in between food for convelescent's getting over an upset tummy but there are more nutritious foods out there for the long term - I'm no expert on nutrition but I'm sure someone will be able to put together a list of decent foods.

I never knew that!! Thats probably what caused my pups blood and mucus in his poos!!!! I switched him to Naturediet and 2 poos later he was fine....the vet didn't tell me, I looked at food on the web

What is it with the Pedigree food then?

Our new boy recently arrived on Pedigree complete puppy, he had nasty stinky quite runny poos and terrible wind, he has been getting less of it and more of the same diet as my other dog (pro plan complete and fresh food) and now his poos are much less stinky and firmer -surprised to hear the pedigree often causes problems.

Ah yes - welcome Caroleanne :-)  I didn't realise that this was your first post

Thanks for the replies. Is there a nutritional difference between the dried chappie food and the tinned type?
- By bevb [in] Date 11.03.08 09:47 UTC
As everyone else said get him off the pedigree.  You can try the tinned chappie chicken and rice as he may be fine on that, although I would go to somewhere like Pets at Home and get him onto Nature Diet Sensitive, that will almost certainly suit him and he will soon be fine again.
Sometimes a wheat/gluten intolerance can cause the problems you are having and chappie does have wheat/gluten in it.  Nature diet does not.

I believe that the dried Chappie isn't the same as wet nutritionally - not as good apparently.

Thanks, This is the first puppy we have had, so we are novices!!!
Excuse my ignorance, but at nearly a year old would u feed twice a day or three times a day?
- By Cairnmania [gb] Date 11.03.08 14:33 UTC
Twice a day.  There might be different recommendations from those on the forum knowledgeable about any breed specific considerations.

I feed my fully adult dogs twice a day and always have done so - from Yorkie to German Shepherd size :-)  (Any breed that is prone to bloat should always be fed twice a day.) Some folks do cut back to once a day for adults; but I don't know anyone who does not at least offer a "snack" of some type in addition to the main meal.

I feed twice a day too. Give mine a snack in the afternoon and at bed time - just a dog biscuit.

Hi

I have three cavaliers and they are all fed on james well beloved complete with a slice of nature diet lite mixed into it to make it more appealing. Two of these dogs I rescued just two weeks ago and was told they wouldnt eat - you should see them getting excited for this food and they have perfectly normal tummies never a problem from the day they came to me..

I also feed twice a day

welcome to the board by the way carole anne

thanks for all the hepl. if I decide to change over, which I think I will, should I do it over roughly how many days?
- By georgepig [gb] Date 12.03.08 14:59 UTC
I tend to do it over a week and increase the proportion of new food a little each day until after a week they are only eating the new food.
