I am going and we have researched pretty much every possible way to get there as we have been trying to find the cheapest way. One thing you MUST make sure at first is that your dog's pet passport is up to SWEDISH standards as WELL as UK standards. To get INTO Sweden the blood test to check the rabies vaccination has been effective must have been taken no less than 120 days after rabies vacc -in the UK the rules are at least 30 days. To us that meant two blood tests (one after 30 days and another after 120) as we did not have time to vacc, wait 120 days, take blood, and then wait 6 months after that as the entire process then would have taken 10 months +. So that is vital or you will not be let in to Sweden if you have travelled via other countries. (If you take a direct flight and therefore do not set paw in other countries, you do not need rabies vacc at all from England TO Sweden.)
If driving, shortest way is take ferry to Holland (takes about 12 hours) and then drive through Belgium, Germany, Denmark and take bridge over to south Sweden. I have found that is also by far the most expensive alternative as the ferry for car, 2 people and dogs will cost around £400-£500 and you still have a lot of petrol costs left. Next alternative, channel tunnel and do the same but obviously starting in France instead. Cheaper still, take ferry Dover to Calais (about £100 for car 2 people and one dog -you must tell all ferry companies in advance you will have a dog as they do charge extra and in some cases like to Holland they will not be allowed to stay in car but kennel must be booked on board) and drive from Calais.
It's not possible to do it all in one day. We'll be starting in South Yorkshire, driving to Dover one day, staying over down south, taking ferry first thing next morning, then will have roughly 12 hours driving to get to southern Sweden from Calais, where we will stay with a friend over night. Then next day roughly a 6 hour drive from Southern Sweden up to Stockholm. We will not enter the breed show as well as the WDS due to cost and time, and have given us two full free days in Sweden without shows when we can rest (one before WDS one after), and in total it will then all take us 9 days.
It would have been a lot easier to take the ferry direct to Denmark or even Norway, but unfortunately NONE of them will accept animals onboard.
