Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / staff pulling on lead
- By colls [gb] Date 09.03.08 13:00 UTC
Hello,I did try to find an exsisting topic on this but I couldnt so how do i stop my 4 month old staff pulling on her lead? I have a couple of books on staffs but they didnt actually say how I could stop it.I have tryed everytime she pulls we stop but as soon as we get going again she pulls and it takes us ages to get anywhere.I take her out 3 times a day but each time I come back with sore hands. At the moment shes still small so I can control her but if I leave it too long she is going to be a fully grown staff taking me for a walk.My friend has got her brother and he dosent pull on the lead I asked how she got him to stop and she said hes never pulled, but hes not good at anything else ie;house training sit stay still crys all night, where as Raven is brilliant in the house.Any advice would be gratefully recived, I would ask my mum and brother as they have staffs but they are on holiday and by the time they get back (2 weeks) I will have one arm longer then the other lol.xxx

Hi Colls, my staffy was terrible for this as a pup and occasionally still is if she is somewhere really exciting e.g. at the beach if she doesn't get off the lead or at a dog show.  I felt the same as you and am really glad I tackled it as a pup as it doesn't bear thinking about now with the strength of her, it totally takes the fun out of walks.

Anyway my solution was to buy one of those stop pulling harnesses that are like string with rubber tubing over the bits where it would rub.  The one I bought lifts the dogs front legs up everytime she pulled and she didn't like it. I only used it a few times and that was enough.  I think it cost approx £7 from PAH.

I've got a staff cross who was always pulling on a lead & the walks were always tough as he gave me sore hands. In the end we brought a body harness which controls him by pulling him up if he pulls. It's the best thing i ever brought as it gives me control & doesn't put preasure on his neck. Hope this helps.

I went out this afternoon and bought a stop pulling harness, came home and took Raven out, oh my god it was like walking a differant dog she pulled a bit at first but i just tugged at the harness and that was it a nice pleasurable walk.Thank you so much for your advice dont know why i didnt think of it sooner.xxxxxxxx

It does make so much difference when they walk better....i had a sigh of relief when Boston got his harness, he was lovely to walk & i got my arms back :) Glad it has helped you :)

Hi Colls,  I only used it temporarily because I felt is was a shame on her getting lifted up by the armpits everytime she pulled.  Hopefully you only need to use it to get her into the habit of walking nicely.

What worked reasonably well with mine was just to stop walking and wait until he turned round to look at me before continuing.   It does take some patience though so best not try it if you are going somewhere in a hurry.

we always have our staff walk with her harness on she walks lovley with it on, and if we are just going to the car we just attach her other lead to her collar, she tends to pull and i dont like the way it seems to make her choke, but i think most staffies seem to pull, unless we are on our way back from her run then shes too tierd to pull!!!!!

I used Halti's for my staffords until they got used to walking alongside me rather than in front of me (usually at a much quicker pace lol). I now just use collars and they're brilliant :)

Hi

I'm new to this site and didn't know how to add my own message.  But my problem is similar to yours.  I have a 18 month old patterdale terrier whos is adorable and is housetrained well.  The only problem is when taking her for a walk, she pulls a little on the lead (we have a normal body harness) but this is managable, however the minute she sees a dog she pulls so  hard it really hurts trying to control her.  She pulls so hard that there are times when she is on two legs which doesn't seem to bother her.  Shall I get an anti pull harness if so which type as I've heard that there are two types one that goes near the neck and one that goes over the head.  Does anyone have any suggestions.  Or should I sign her up for dog obedience classes?  Apart from being strong willed like any dog she does try it on a bit but she does do as she is told, so I wasn't sure if this option would be a waste of time.

Can anybody help?

maybe a halti instead if she's not fussed about pulling her chest. its a head harness- NOT A MUZZLE!- really good for steering them, a little bit like a horses bridle

I would try a halti before you go for training classes because if she is a generally good dog then a halti might work,if not then try the classes.xx
