BUGBEAR is the latest virus doing the rounds and it is very similar to the Klez virus. It will take any email address as the sender, so you need to watch your virus protection very carefully, because it could come to you from friends. Note: this does not mean that your friends have the virus.

You do not have to open the attachment to get infected

Again, keep your virus definitions up to date and every now and then, run a different virus checker, just to make sure that your usual virus protection hasn't been contaminated.

I am still getting blitzed by Klez, so some of you have this virus and because it has corrupted your virus protection, you think you are clean when you are not :-(

How do we know if we have the virus. I run Pc cillan which seems quite good

If you click on the link Leigh gave you can see what the Virus does ...I would imagine (don't know for sure) that your peecee would start sending emails to all people in your address book .

This is a very real threat and has been upgraded from a category 2 to a category 3...bad news in other words.

If you check the home page of PC Cillan and search for BUGBEAR you should be able to tell if they are aware and if they have included it on your virus protection system

Hi Leigh
Can you tell which of us have the Klez virus?

To be honest we pay very little attention to where the emails originate from. Champdogs receive such a huge number (I have had 42 in the last 24 hours) that it would be impossible to notify everyone. It is also a pointless exercise sending emails to people to warn them that they 'may' have a virus. You could infact be making the problem worse if you are infected and do not know :-( Many of the viruses harvest email addresses from various sources and it does not follow that the 'sender' has infact been infected. Your best bet is to keep your protection up to date and to occassionally, run a second test from a different anti-virus provider. That will make sure your main anti-virus protection has not been compromised :-)

There are many available online:

Housecall

Panda

AVG

Thanx Leigh, I'm going in a minute to update and scan as I haven't updated since last week, will scan with Housecall too. :)

I'm now clean too- but please everyone please do one of the checks above that Leigh mentioned. I have Norton supposedly protecting mine but it still missed the one that I've sent you all unknowingly! and the housecall has found one;

JS_GIGGAR.A

Please re-boot to clear the trojan

 Anyway just to let you all know that I'm clean now and I think all those of you who I sent the Inbox Angel too will have to run a further virus check:( And that's quite a lot of you!

Oh crikey, one of them was me Stacey:) Well I have updated from AVG (last one available 30/09/02) it included Bugbear as I went to check on their site.

I have run a test and it has come up clear:D May be I'll down load another that Leigh has sugested too?

Trouble is I have no idea what to do if my virus checker finds one:D

If your virus protection identifies a virus, in most instances it will tell you what it has done about it and/or what you need to do, if anything :-)

Stacey ... welcome to the wonderful world of the internet. Don't feel guilty.
If you use the net .. then sooner or later you were going to get caught out
;-)

Phew - good job one of us knows what we are doing then - guess it will be the PC in this case then;)

Stacey, I meant my Oh crikey in the nicest possibly way:D As in poor you etc, I'd already done the virus stuff after reading Leigh's first post it had nothing to do with you:D

This is all quite new to me but I've got AVG and it checks every time I boot up the computer but I also did an update today (same as Reefer) but I think I'll try that Housecall as well just to be sure.

I hope I'm doing everything right. Just keep doing threads like this to educate me :) :)
