I don't know exact details, but a friend of a friend here at work has just tried to insure her dog (5 months old) with several insurance companies (online).
One of the companies websites wouldn't work correctly so the lady in question called them and they refused to insure her dog based on breed, now this is not a quote, but what the person on the other end of the phone said to this lady went along the lines of:
'it is classed as a dog that should be muzzled under section e of the DDA and so therefore it is a breed that we won't insure' or words to that effect...
The dog in question is a Shar Pei...

I'm a bit puzzled to say the least and will be aiming to get the right story AND the insurance company involved..
Has anyone else had this experience?

I've just renewed my insurance after the free 6 wks KC ins, and yes, lots of companies I looked at would'nt insure certain breeds...

Never heard of shar peis being under DDA, maybe they are classing all breed that were bred for fighting many moons ago. That isnt very good because most bullbreeds were inc my own. There are alot of health issues with them maybe the lady was mistaken. Try another which ones did she try? Petplan?

Surely ANY breed of dog could at some point fall under the DDA if it attacked a person in a public place etc etc but as shar peis are not on the banned list I would guess the reason for not insuring them was more to do with health issues.  I wouldn't like to think an insurance company would exclude a breed just because it 'might' be dangerous (not that I'm saying shar peis are!)

When I was looking around for insurance I noticed a few places that excluded them, amongst various other breeds and hybrids.  I can imagine them having fairly high premiums though.

If you look at the first couple of posts on THIS previous thread it may shed some light on things :(

The dangerous dog act includes 'any dog appearing to be of fighting type'. Shar Peis were originally bred as fighting & guard dogs.

Grrrr. the dangerous dogs act makes out that it is the dogs that are dangerous, when in 99.9% of the time it's the flippin owners :(

I hope your friend finds a decent policy, without having to pay through the nose, I'm sure her dog is lovely :)

just use petplan. simple. no hassle.

I don't know as yet which company the lady tried to use..

I too have SBT's and have had no problem insuring them..

Interestingly I did a couple of quick quotes on a couple of insurance websites, some of which did not list the Shar Pei as a choice of breed but did with SBT's.

I will look at the other thread's thank you.
As a Stafford owner, I have read the DDA from start to finish many times!  lol  But I still find it hard to comprehend that they will not insure this 5 month old dog...
Shall look forward to finding more information about the whole thing and I'll let you know if and when I do :-)
