Well, have I had a night. My husband took a stud enquiry the other day and asked the bitches owner had she all the health checks etc. which we made her do (all come back clear) Well they came here tonight.
I have never ever seen a bitch so nasty, the owners said she was on day 11, which there was no way in this world. As my male went to mate her she jump round and attacked him, we tried again and the same happened, I'm a bath of sweat.
I think the bitch was way past day 11, so I told her there was no point continuing and she would be better off waiting to her next season.

I never had a bitch like that. I've only just got my breath back.

Hi Reesy,

perhaps the timing was wrong - regardless of whether day 11 or not :)  Days 11 & 13 are guidelines only - and bitches don't read the books and charts that breeders do!  She may have been beyond her optimum time by a week or up to 10 or so days too early for "her" even if on day 11 :)

Was this a maiden bitch?  Has the dog been used before?

Ditto what Teri said, not sure how experienced you are at feeling the vulva area but with really super clean hands you can general feel whether it is still really swollen puffy at the entrance or actually tightening back up. This generally tells you whether she is too early, too late or just a bitch who doesn't want mated :-)

Edited to add I really recommend blood testing maiden bitches.

I was just gonna ask if she was a maiden bitch, as sometimes you can get that reaction from a bitch like that.

Did you try holding her?  To let your stud mount her?  Muzzle maybe?

Could be the timing was off, as other posters have mentioned.

my bitch takes on day 9! and she has to be held and muzzled even the second time. some biches just dont like it but she was a great mum to 2 litters. bitches should always be held anyway for safety, surely you knew that??

My last bitch wasn't ready for mating until day 18 for her last litter! If we'd tried on day 11 we'd have had exactly the same reaction as from 'your' bitch; but on the right day she was a total tart!

Hi Guys
She was being held, I thought she looked too late but her owners said they wanted to try. This was the first time for her, but i think the timing was totally wrong.

A friend just used her dog for the first time.  We advised the bitch came to stay early before she was ready so that they could get to know each other and for the dog to get his act together before it was too late.

The bitch was a mature maiden of some 3 1/2 years of age.  Her dam had not been ready until day 18, and in my breed most bitches seem to be ready from day 14 to 16, rather than earlier.

She was supposed to be on day 10, but within 10 minutes of being introduced they had her mated as she was very keen.  They had a mating on the next two days and then she was showing signs that she was going over, so she was crated if the dog pestered her, and things settled down, to the boy begging and the bitch saying no, and stud owner tearing hair out with the squeaking :D

She was due to go home yesterday 3 days after the last mating.  Just before her owners arrival she decided to be a tart and stand again 8-), this was day 16.

Readiness to mate and the fertile days don't always coincide accurately :D  It is very unlikely if that last mating had been the only one that it would have been successful.  I am pretty sure that if she takes she will whelp to the first matings, and not the parting shot six days after the first.

My mentor who always had stud dogs in the past, always liked to have a bitch come to stay from about day 8 (before they were likely to be any where near ready).  They were then introduced to the stud each day, and usually stayed for long enough to be mated for three days or until the bitch was no longer standing.  this meant that her studs learnt how to assess a bitch, and mate when they were ready rather than because they were presented with a bitch, as they had to wait.  She very rarely had bitches miss to her dogs.

Mind you, one of my friends had a bitch come who was ready but just went completely mad when they brought the dog in, tore free of her owners and attacked the dog and broke one of his teeth!!! The poor owners were absolutely horrified, and (which I think was possibly overreacting, but better safe than sorry?) decided not only never to mate the bitch, but to take her straight to the vets to be spayed to ensure no possible chance of carrying on her temperament. Of course she may have just been terrified and acting out of character, but I don't know.

My girl was perfectly happy to stand both seasons that she was mated on, so I'm lucky in that respect, but I agree with Brainless - I strongly suspect she was being laid back and putting up with standing and being mated on the first season we tried, as the second attempt which did produce puppies was a few days earlier than the first attempt which didn't, and even that second time I think we went almost too late!

I've found that bitches vary from season to season.  Also, the maidens do get funny if they're not ready.  Last year a bitch was brought to my dog, and, although he played with her, and made a fuss, he made no atempt to mate her.  The owner said that it was day 10.  It was a Saturday, and the owners left the bitch with me, as they had travelled a long way.  The following Thursday she was mated, and every day until the Sunday.  8 weeks after the first mating, she whelped 3 pups.  8 weeks gestation is not uncommon in the breed.  This bitch was quite panic stricken during the tie, and I had to reassure her all the time (my boy just quietly stood there as usual.)  Yesterday, the same bitch returned.  She was on day 8, and the owner had phoned me on day 1, so I expected the bitch to be here a while.  I did comment that the vulva seemed to have gone down, and felt very loose.  The owners had only left 10 minutes when she barked at my boy and thrust her bum in his face.  No panic this time!  So, even in the same bitch, readiness can vary quite a bit.
