Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / My Boy wont perform!

I have a male whom is 3 years old & he is showing alot of interest in my 4 year old bitch...but just wont mount her!
I did take them both to a breeders home on Saturday (bitches 10th day) and he still showed no interest to mount we put it down to HIM not knowing what to do, also she was standing even on her 9th day for him!..we did also try to breed them both last year & said the same he was not sure but keen (8 months ago) he was still immature to perform...
She is on her 12th day today and desperate but again he is still licking biting her...I have vet checked them both and spoken to my vet whom said he may to too familer with her and to keep them seperate throughout the day and then intorduce them only to try to mate.. but i have been doing that already. They both are toy breeds whom parents have been successful in breeding & parenting and both breeders of them cant really think what else is wrong except he is still immature, can you shed in light on this please?
Therefore this is my last attempt at getting one of their pups, both dogs i have had since they were 10 weeks old and are show dogs and very loving indoor pets. I am getting my bitch dressed if no pups concieved as she is 4 and half years of age and no prevoius litters, i was going to use another recommended stud but he is due at crufts (as was my bitch) and friend didnt think it was the right timing to use her boy..sorry for being so long winded, and i have breed dogs before just not this toy breed. Any help would be grateful even if its not for my girl this time! Thank you

I don't have a toy breed so don't know if there is much of a difference in mating timings, but my bitch (a maiden) was taken to the stud (also a maiden) last year. She was more than ready, and he was licking her, but she only wanted to play. After a few attempts I put her lead on and started to take her away. He didn't like that and mounted and tied very quickly ;-) It might be worth a try if you have got the bitches timing right. She might not be quite ready yet. I agree on keeping them apart though. He might just manage to mate and tie when you aren't there, and could cause damage. Alos, absence makes the heart grow fonder, or so they say :-D

It is generally best to avoid trying to mate two maidens (inexperienced) dogs.  I would be taking your bitch to a good stud, either your dogs Father or an experienced half brother etc, to get similar bloodlines.

This would prove your bitch.

The same with your boy, if he is successful as a show dog his breeder may know someone with an experienced bitch that might be prepared to use him, if they know he is available.

This would then give you two proven animals if you really wanted a litter from them in another year to 18 months.

Many males will lack the confidence to mate the boss (which in a dog and bitch pari the bitch usually is), i.e. and older bitch they live with, especially if they are maidens.

when our bitch was taken to stud she ended up staying for a few days with them as no interest what so ever- bit of sniffing, thats it, they just wanted to play (ah, young love ;) )

we had bloods done at the vet who said she was ready- not worth it at all! 3 days later, the day she was coming home, they decided was right and tied for an hour. she's probably just not ready to his nose yet. unfortunately though you do sometimes get ones who are just not interested...

Usually if they are raised together they may never breed each other- I had that problem at first with my 2- I bathed both my dogs- had the male leave for awhile and brought back- he then did mount her and it worked like a charm.

If your male tried mounting her before and got in trouble for it (from her) then he maybe less likely to try now.

hi & BIG THANKS for all your replys!
no he has NEVER EVER MOUNTED!! So no need to have been ever told off...he is an Angel Really!!!!

Just plays and does the usual flirting dancing biting all the Romantic stuff but NO PROPER ACTION!!!

We were going to use a  Proven stud that we both, myself and breeder (of my bitch) looked into but he is at crufts and as we live 300 plus miles away from crufts well that was no good as the timing would have been all wrong sadly..
My Dogs father and brothers live even further away and again are going to crufts so just bad timing altogether for my bitch really..
We also have had bloods done and my vet really suggested all the same as you have done..seperation, keeping him away and bringing him back in for an hour or so etc...

Today she has him pinned to the ground and is totally frustrated by his lack of understanding lol..
Going to try the BATH suggestion but 13/14th day today so time is nigh

Just now thinking whats meant is meant...shame tho..but thats how Breeding is I suppose Lotsa Money & Losta Time &  Losta Stress!

Thanks Once again & I am PROBABLY JUST TO YOUNG TO BE A GRANDMOTHER EH?

i had a maiden dog and maiden bitch i wanted to mate who lived together I didnt want to upset either by not getting right and although have mated dogs previously i,m by no way experienced so i took the 2 of them to an experienced stud dog handler they both traveled to him in separate cars  and we got 2 good matings and no upset and 9 lovely puppies
