The Barbet has been rejected as a new breed  by the Kennel Club, it may not surprise some of you, but I have to admit I was disappointed.I am not sure it affects anyone else on this forum, but part of the acceptance criteria is now 20 dogs preferably unrelated. I have also been informed that I cannot reapply for three years. One of my dogs is expecting her first litter, something the Kennel Club advised as it would increase the numbers of the breed in the UK, however I am very confused as surely these puppies will be related, and also  if we get the breed accepted in three years, do you think the KC will register three year old dogs with no paperwork. There seems little point asking the Kennel Club as what they say and what they do, are entirely different. Does anyone else have any experience that may help me, as far as I can see everydoor has been slammed.

I've no experience of the acceptance of newbreeds  by the KC of new breeds, but my experience in general of the KC is to make sure you have everything in writing from the. There are members on here who have imported new breeds, but none in the recent(as in the last 5 years)I think. I would have all your dogs permamently ID'd & also DNA profiled(doesn't have to be through the KC there are labs that do DNA profiling in the UK). Are the parents of your dogs FCI registered ? If so their puppies will have papers & DNA links.

It might be worth talking to the KC direct & get a contact there who you can build a relationship with, much easier to talk to someone who knows who you are

The parents of my dogs are FCI registered, and both my barbets are registered  in France, well they have LOF numbers, so have confirmation.
I was thinking of DNA profiling for the pups born, although if they have no papers they cannot be shown abroad either, or does anyone know how.
I have dealt with the KC for three years, only over importing, but I have lost confidence in their advice.

Can you register them with the FCI country their parents are from, or is residence compulsory?

Australian shepherds were well established in the UK before they were accepted on the KC Import register where they were only a short time before coming off Imports and going onto Rare breed status, and not long before they had CC's.  They must have had some method of recording the pups, that would then be acceptable to the KC.

They have to reside in the FCI country to be registered there. I am looking for a loophole, but none one wishes to register the litter.

I think the Aussies were on the activities register & when recognised went en masse onto the full register

Umm I know that dogs have been registered in an FCI country that have been born here!!  So there are ways around it, by the looks of things!

The DDB kept their own registry I think until they were able to be registered, but as Moonmaiden says you could register them under the activities register for now.

It's weird our breed was registered straight away when we brought them in, but it took us a further 8 years to get them on the import register and now 16 years later we are on the full register!  I'm actually pleased that it took so long as it stopped people buying and breeding from them, which only can be for the good of the breed in the early stages in my opinion.

I don't know the loophole, maybe I need a co owner, that lives in Ireland. If I register them under the activities register, that doesn't get round the puppies born having a registration number either to compete or be used abroad. I have no wish for the breed to become popular, I just want to safeguard the puppies produced and their future. There are only 600 dogs worldwide, for the genepool to be dispersed its vital that some should be used overseas.
I think its weird that a club can change things and not inform those in the process, and sadly there is no alternative. I wonder if this sort of thing happens with British rare breeds abroad, there are a few people I have met on my travels with the barbets that are involved with saving British rare breeds, nice to see and I have helped them as much as I can.

Thanks Brainless, will try and see how they did that.
