hello

i am really worried, i have lost my car kets and think i need to get to the vet asap.

my pups r 4 weeks old, all doing really well, yesterday i started them on a very mushy puppy food watered down with cool boiled water. all tucked in an seemed fine. ths morning i have woken to the smallest girl having been sick and really lethargic.
i have given her some lactol and a little cooled water with glucose which she took very slowly.
she wont latch onto mum, mum seems to b refusing her too. i am really worried as dogs seem to know what we cant see.

i called the vet and they had no advice apart from get her to them when i can. which is hard as i have lost all my keys!

i am keeping her seperate to the rest and am tryi g her with the water about every 30 min, but i am really frightened. i cant get hold of anyone else, please help!

phone the vet and explain. The nurse may be able to come out and get you
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 29.02.08 11:33 UTC
Failing that keep ringing everyone. Try neighbours etc. Even people you dont know. It is an emergency after all. Do you/partner not have a spare set? Know anyone with a car they'd lend you?
- By Rach85 [gb] Date 29.02.08 11:42 UTC
You should be looking for keys rather then posting on here!! :)

Hope you find them and get the pups sorted, but you can call the emergency call out vet if you believe you really wont find them and they will come to you, or taxi is nice and wuick this time of day.
- By klang2001 [gb] Date 29.02.08 11:46 UTC
i have tried all the neighbours, no ones home, hubby has the spare set of keys, he is going to hope to get home for about 3, i am just going to keep watching her like a hawk and may get a taxi over soon.. just hope the local burglars dont see me leave the house open! she seems really hot, i have been cuddling her and she seems to be sweating. she has just taken a whole bottle of water though, so that is good,
as she is hot, should i not put her near the heat pad? i dont want her to chill, but i dont wat her to get even hotter, i am worried that cuddling her is making her too hot. she sems to be wheezing now. i am so frightened, mum just doesnt want anything to do with her..
- By LindaMorgan [gb] Date 29.02.08 11:48 UTC
Please get her to the vet as soon as possible, tel hubby come home now 3 may be to late

i have ransacked the house, hubby has the spare, they wont let him out of work and he works a good hour away... talk about sods law.

vets should be calling back in a sec.
- By tadog [gb] Date 29.02.08 11:50 UTC
dont they have taxis where u live?
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 29.02.08 12:01 UTC
Where are you? Do any of us live near?
Get your partner home now or taxi. Even if it's costly its better tahn waiting. Sorry to state the obvious but if puppy is very hot then stop cuddling it. I know you probably want the reassurance but pup may need to cool down a bit. :-)
Keep us posted.xxx

taxi.. i live in the middle of know where, they were less than helpful. hubby is nearly home.. he just called.. vets called back and they have got a vet in for 1pm.. again, middle of know where and they have to call vets in...all ready, just waiting for the car now..

mum has given her a lick, 1st emotion since 7.30 this morning.. may be she is just lost as to what to do.

i have pup in a box now and while she is wheezing, she looks cooler as she isnt shaking now...all others r ok, at the moment.

will let u know the outcome when i get home

thanks for all ur help

hello

just got home,

they are keeping her in, they think she has either picked up a tum bug or has an obstruction. they are running a few tests and doing an x-ray later.

they said i did the right thing getting what fluid i could into her, and they are going to take over feeding and get as much goodness into her as they can.

they are not sure why she is wheezing as her chest sounded clear.. so this is odd.

i feel very sad, they dotn think she will pull through but they are doing all they can.

all the others are fine, mum is fine. maybe giving them the sloppy solids last night has triggere this obstruction? who knows..

the vets are calling me back at 5 with an update

oh, hubby had taken both sets of keys// wasnt till he got to work he found them, hence him getting home so quick...wish he had said earlier before i tok the house to bits.

thanks for all your help

thank you, she needs all positive thoughts going her way.

sorry for all my terrible spelling, just fingers were going faster than head.

I gave her a name at the vets, just felt that if i was going to lose her, she should have a proper name.

hello

the vet called me at 7.45, boy was i in a panic..i was supposed to call them at 7.50 to them calling me had me thinking the worse

anyway, she is improving, she is very aneamic and still has protien but her glucose levels are good, apparetly they can drop fast in poorly pups?

she still has an upset tum, but the vet said she had been sitting up and barking every now and thn, shich considering she was a limp little sole this morning is great news!

they are saying it is a bacterial infection of some sort, not really a name for it, but she is on anti biotics and pain killers along with whelpi and water.

i am calling at 9 am and hopefully she will be well enough to come home. i just want her better so i am not going to get my hopes up of her coming home just yet, but it would be lovely.

i am worried how mum is going to react to her when she does come home, could she still refuse to feed her? the vet suggested i keep to 2 hourly feeds when she comes home, so i am not worried about feeding her, i have everything ready and will do what ever is needed to get this little girl better.

will up date you tomorrow, please keep fingers and paws crossed for little Isabelle.

just want to update you all as you have all been so kind

Isabelle came home at 11 am, i called the vet at 9 as they sugested and they said they would call me back in about 10 min. 40 min later the vet called saying that she had picked up, but have started to show some kind of rash over her tum, possibly due to the meds they gave her last night to get her temp down. they said i coul dpick her up and return on monday with her.

so i picked her up and they showed me the rash, i was shocked, it looked like the kind of rsh they show you on tv that comes with meningitus, it was very dark red and look just like she was bleeding under the skin. they said it had got better since the night so we were sent home thinking it was nothing really.

all afternoon she cried in pain, but she was able to take her whelpi.

she was bleeding from both places by this time and while she was moving and sitting, she was obviously in pain. The vets had given her what they said was enough pain killer to last her till monday... i dont know how as she was in need of more and i feltso helpless.

i called the vet at 7.30 as i felt she needed to be back in hosp asap, but on the way to the vet, and cradled in my arms, she died.
she was 4 weeks old today, my whole family is devestated, my 9 yr old boy has shown emotion like never before.

all the other pups are doing very well, they are playing and eating their sloppy mushy pup food and have discovered the best game ever of playing with a tennis ball... i just feel so terrbily sad with out isabelle to play too.

she was a feisty little girl and so delicate too. sleep well my little Isabelle.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 01.03.08 22:59 UTC
Ahh how terrible.  Dogs can get meningitis are the vets sure that it wasn't this?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 01.03.08 23:22 UTC
I am sorry you have lost her.  Are you going to get a postmortem done?
- By suz1985 [gb] Date 01.03.08 23:42 UTC
sorry to hear about that, what a shame to lose one at 4 weeks.
i think canine meningitis is different from our form , the cases ive seen dont have rash as a symptom, usually high temps and pain when moving.
- By LindaMorgan [gb] Date 01.03.08 23:46 UTC
I am so upset for you, you must be devastated, thinking of you all at this sad, sad time, but she can now run free at the bridge.

(((((((((Hugs)))))))) to all your family, I lost one of my last litter at 4wks after struggling to keep him alive as well, its so heartbreaking, but you did the best you could and sadly wasn't meant to be.  Thoughts are with you at this sad time.
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 03.03.08 11:35 UTC
haven't had access to internet over weekend and wondered how the little pup was doing. Such a shame. My thoughts are with you.
You can be ressured by the fact you did everything you could and as promptly as you could. She was one of the ones who wasn't meant for this world. When she did go, she was cuddled up to the last minute.
RIP little lady.xxx

Hi so sorry to hear about your pup.(((((hugs))))))) I too lost one of my recent litter so I know how devastating it is. My 9 year old daughter was understandibly very upset (he was her fav from birth) but talking about it helped both of us, we also bought a little memorial together and she now speaks about squirrel without getting upset. Thinking of you and your son at this difficult time. Run free at the bridge little Isabelle enjoy games with Squirrel.
