Topic Dog Boards / General / FANTASTIC NEWS FOR ALL WHO READ ABOUT CHOW IN VAN
- By wonkydog [gb] Date 01.03.08 18:57 UTC
Hi all,

The fantastic news is that the owner voluntarily gave the Chow Chow up to the RSPCA on Thurday!!!!! Hooray!! But not before the situation got worse. The owner got sick of the police, RSPCA & worried locals looking in at him and checking on his welfare so the idiot boarded the poor dog in the back of the van and as the windows are blacked out this meant he was deprived of any natural light! But I hear you all saying "that surely isn't on, and the RSPCA must be able to do something now?" Wrong!!!! That dog lived boarded in the back of that van for approx 3 weeks. No one could tell if he had food or water, I involved high up officers in both the police and the RSPCA, contacted Chow Chow rescue, local MP, local animal hospital, my vet, council including environmental dept, local papers, and probably others i'll remember later and not one had any power to do a thing. Sadly the Chow is only free from his disgusting life because that idiot gave him up and not because he had to, but the main thing is the poor chap is now free and has the chance of a proper loving home as he's gone to a rescue centre. This goes to show you how scarey it is that somebody can treat an animal in such an appauling way and no body can do anything about it legally. The RSPCA are on the whole powerless unless the person responsible for a suffering animal willingly complies to the weak, laughable and pathetic animal laws we have, oh, unless of course they have a camera crew with them!

This sounds about right. Other countries would have had the dog out of there and the bloke in handcuffs!!

To be honest, I have NO faith in the RSPCA. None whatsoever. They are as good as useless as nothing governs them and they have nothing to govern. Plus, even if they did have something to prosecute this bloke with...the most he would have got would have probably been a slap on the wrist and told "you are not to do that again".

Makes me sick.

I know, it's really opened my eyes and made me realise why people become activists.

Yes, they look good on the programmes they run on Animal Planet, but I know my friend called them repeatedly on a lady who had gone senile and was neglecting her dogs to the point several died, and they did NOTHING until the lady herself died and they managed to rescue the last 3. Claws grown into feet, collars so embedded only the metal clasp was showing, you name it, it was disgusting.

Thank God this Chow has a chance at a good life now. :-)

Hi,
That's fantastic news, hope Chow finds a good home extremely soon.
But why has it taken so much to free this poor animal from horrible situations! I thought this new animal welfare rights law would give RSPCA more power, oviously not. :-(
The law should be altered, just my opinoin.

Great outcome, eventually, though shame that RSPCA got him and not Chow Chow rescue as they are a breed that need knowledgeable owners who know how to groom etc.

You could contact Chow rescue so they can steer people his way and perhaps he will get a better chance of the right home as the RSPCA have a poor record of working with breed rescue.

Good news to hear that the chow is out of that horrid situation.  Too bad the RSPCA is useless.

Good thing the chow got out, as those conditions are so horrific, such an idiot owner.  But at least he made the decision to release the dog, but still, it was only because of the attention the owner was getting, not in the wellbeing of the dog.

That is such good news and well done to you for being so caring and trying your hardest to get the dog free.

Shame that is took so long and that the dog was taken away sooner but you couldn't have done any more than you did !

Well done again !

I am really glad that the Chow chow is now free from his horrid situation.
It really is horrifying how such things can go on without challenge from the authorities. I am sure that your persistence in this issue had a part to play in the "voluntary" giving up of this dog to rescue, as he may well not have done this without the pressure you applied. Well done for sticking to it.

Can I just say Your determination in this case has been incredible. I take my hat off to you, at least this dog has the chance for a decent life now. I agree though shame the RSPCA has him and not chow rescue, hopefully they will find him a specialised home. I cannot believe though that with so many complaints coming in the police and RSPCA were powerless to do anything!!!!

I've been asked to add to previous thread instead of starting a new one, sorry if this confused anyone but to be honest I wasn't sure if anyone would see it if I replied to first one, not sure how it works. The other one 'more fantastic news' has been locked!!!!! I presume that people who have made comments to a thread are alerted someway if another is added???? I don't know.

I just want to second ottomans post. Well done for your tenacity and glad to hear that the boy is safe at last.

they are not alerted so the best thing to do is copy and paste the post you made that is locked and put on here so people can see the update :)

Oh well done - all your effrort paid off!

Fantastic news,
- By Tenaj [gb] Date 03.03.08 10:57 UTC
wow thank goodness his ordeal is over.

A really shocking story, Just shows how unmanageably horrific the situations of animals are who are abused and neglected enough to get the help of the RSPCA.  Really abysmally shocking.

Isn't it awful to think the right think to do was really to break into the car and save the dog right at the start but that is illegal! People involved in this case were really placed in a terrible possition. Well done.

WELL DONE!!! Fantastic news :-)
Shame it was done because he handed the dog over, not that the dog was seized. Just worried as to how long it takes him to get another dog.
Are you going to carry on and look into the situation - make any complaints etc?? Not trying to find you work to do :-)  but what would happen if this happened again. Or it happened to one of us? Hows the best way to deal with it etc. We all need to know so we can do our bit.
I think i may have a look on the internet out of interest and see what info there is about this.

CONGRATULATIONS again!!!!x

The RSPCA is hopeless.

That's why I quite like watching  "Animal Cops Houston"  and suchlike - the Americans don't seem to muck about; they get the police involved, steam in and seize the animals in a way that should happen over here.
