My youngest dog is allergic to Drontal (great stuff)! We found this out a while ago and I decided to change him over to Panacur granules. My oldest dog is fine on Drontal and always has been.
However, for me it's come to that time of year where I bulk buy the wormers and flea treatment for the rest of the year (I do it in one go) and I've had another good look at Panacur. Really I'm just a bit concerned on the differences the two wormers give. Drontal is "For the control of gastrointestinal tapeworms and roundworms in dogs and puppies" whereas Panacur Granules "are an effective easy to use wormer". If I remember rightly I think (THINK!!!) my vet said Panacur doesn't cover heartworm. Being the dosey person I am, I threw out the last box in December when I last used it so I can't remember what it actually said.
Thinking about it now, Panacur doesn't actually seems as good. Obviously, I can't give Drontal to Alpha because he starts to refuse to eat, then when he does eat he's sick then goes and has the squits all over the garden for about five days straight. So if your dog has adverse reactions to Drontal is there no alternative out there that will do the same job?
Any advice would be great! Thanks!

I use the Panacur !0% suspension and it says on the box
For the treatment of adult dogs and cats infected with gastro-intestinal roundworms and tapeworms, (several different types) also effective against lungworms. Also for the treatment of Giardia. This one can also treat pregnant dogs and unweaned pups and kittens ;) Dosages are different to treat for giardia or lungworm.
Sorry no mention of heartworms.
I use it because both mine reacted badly to drontal. I also needed something that I could give to dogs and cats easily.
Have looked at info on heartworms and it isn't in UK, it is in Europe tho, so a risk if going abroad.

Actually the Panacur is the only think that will touch the heart-worm that the dogs can get in the UK (that found in snails), and for treating that is given monthly.
It also covers various other worms but not tape worm, so separate tape worm tablet may need to be given when fleas are most active (summer). as tapeworms are passed on by fleas.

My puppy's vet switched to using
Milbemax for most dogs.
HOWEVER There are some breeds like collies that may have bad reastions to it. They have a
disclaimer on their site so you should check with your vet before using it.
Tape worm is rare in puppys, who told you to worm against this?
If I remember rightly, Panacur only does certain larval stages of Tapeworm, not the adult form if that makes any sense. Isabelle surely if a puppy can be exposed to a flea then it can be exposed to Tapeworm?

sorry it is www.homeopet.co.uk !
Thanks for the link tadog. Will check it out!!
Going back to my original question though...
Is there actually an alternative? Drontal "controls" worms. Panacur is a "treatment" for worms.
I want something that controls, but something Alpha won't be allergic to!!

Both Drontal and Panacur kill worms, but Drontal kills a wider spectrum and Panacur has more action against toxacara at the larval stages.
