Hi,
Looking at buying a puppy soon, still doing research!
What would you class as puppy farming?
How do you know good breeders from bad?
I would be contacting the breed clubs of the breed (s) i was interested in, and then speaking to those breeders. IMO puppy farmers come in a wide variety of terms, if that's the right phrase. By this I mean, someone, who breeds for the sake of breeding, not too worried about which dog they use on which bitch, etc. I would be wary of someone who always has or is about to have puppies available.
But I would always try to speak to people who have been in my chosen breed for a while, so if I do have a puppy from them I know I have my breeders support should anything happen, and also someone at the end of a phone should I need advice or help.

Easy to spot the big farmers, much more difficult to spot the smaller ones :( claiming to have bred their pet bitch ;) usually own the dad, no health testing as the vet said she's fine etc. no need to show/work them as they are bred to be pets, will send you the papers in the post, not Kc reg tho (where's the rolling eye smiley!) blah blah blah :( :(
I actually spotted a large litter of an expensive breed advertised on a puppy site "pups not reg for tax reasons"

no expense spared there!
