Wormed the pups for the first time today and on the vets sticker it said 1ml per 100g well smallest pup is 682gms so gave it 6 mls after reading the box it says 0.5mls per kilo of pup, phones vets they said don't worry just done worm them over the next 2 days like I should. I am so worried as you know these pups are not mine.
Linda

This happened to a Friend of mine who gave her pup twice the dose she should have had over 3 days which was 1ml per KG and the pup became sensitive to the Panacur and has never been able to handle it since. Teh wrong dosage had been listed by the Vet.
When in due course her litter was wormed she became ill as obviously she was getting it after she cleaned up the pups waste.
As I read it you have given your pups six times the dose they should have had per day but still 3 times the total dose.
I would be very wary of using this wormer on them again, and would be worried about the possible long term effects on their gut.
I hope they are OK.

this happened to me when i wormed my pup he was 12 weeks old though, i read the adult part the same as you and then realised what id done he was fine though

This also happened to a friend of mine and although the vet and manufacturer instructions and research indicated that there shouldn't be any reaction, she made sure to give the pup a very small amount of bio yoghurt to protect the stomach and intestine.
keep a close eye on the pup. I would switch to Drontal puppy now, age guide they give is 2,4,6 and 8 weeks, just one dose not like panacur over 3 days and very easy to work out the dosage/ weight ratio. Hope the pup is ok

I have spoken to my usual vet who is just brilliant as I was extremeley distraught and he has phoned the company that makes it, they have said they will be ok but not to give them anymre until the next lot at 5wks. Just reading the above post and remember my labs had drontal bcause they were done every 2 wks, should've stuck to that. I can't believe what I have done.

Linda, don't beat yourself up over this. You're doing someone a favour, and everyone makes mistakes. I am positive that it's been tested up to a much higher overdose than you have given. I don't use Drontal, as I worm bitches with Panacur during pregnancy, and only Panacur is licensed for pregnant bitches. One litter last year, I was worried, as when pups get the 3 day course, the bitch should be given normal adult dose for ONE DAY. I nearly died when I realised that I had given the bitch Panacur for 3 days the same as the pups. I have been using Panacur for a long time, and it's not as if I was worming my first litter. I felt so guilty in case I had harmed any of them, and I couldn't believe that I had been so stupid. There were no ill effects whatsoever. Although when the next 3 day course was due I checked the dosage a gazillion times to make sure I had got it right! You'll do just fine with them.

My Ex measured out the worm does for my litter, he overdosed them and the poor wee souls had really bad runs, but did recover well.
Hopefully the pups will be fine. I know in adult dogs and horses it is very hard to overdose on wormer.
I would be taking it up with the vet though, it is appalling they put the wrong dose on the label. My vets put the wrong dose on the box once, but luckily I had used the wormer before and knew the correct dose, so hadn't even read the label. I got a very worrie dphone call from the vet receptionist when I got home to let me know of the mistake though, she had just got a severe telling off from her boss for the mistake.
The vets are really at fault here, I am not suprised they are being helpful now, they should really be taking it very seriously.

Panacur panic over, The syringe they gave me went upto 100 so i thought that was mls no the 100 meant 1 ml so not overdosed tem didn't give em enough but vet still at fault for putting wrong dose on. Going in tomorrow not happy bunny I have been worried sick all night, I haven't taken my eyes of the pups once.
Linda

You have been lucky, thank goodness!
Pups have occasionally had very serious sensitivities to Panacur - I only use it on the bitches, and never on the pups - I use an alternative., usually puppy Drontal
Jo

I dont know why i chose panicur as I have always used drontal.
Linda

As an owner of pups who died after having Drontal last year I don't know what I'd use nowadays! It may not of been the worming medication but another litter soon after had exactly the same symptoms but luckily survived.

try www.doghealth.co.uk I have a friend that only uses homeopathy on her dogs vaccine + wormers. I certainly will not Drontal my pupy anymore as she reacted v badly twice. I have also had a couple of pups react in a similar way in the past.
Hi how long did yours have the runs for. ??

U are unlikely to get an answer on this thread as it is very old.
I suggest u start a new one
