I was on my walk this morning along Chester canal and just happened to look into the water and there was a little duckling all wonky in the water and going round in circles with his beak in the water - looked like it would drown.

I just put my hand in and scooped it out. The mother didn't even object and was about 5m away.

So now I have a little duckling (called Chester!) who my flat mate says is about 3 days old.  I travelled 30mins to get him chick crumbs.  He is now in a box with a towel, teddy bear (roo from winnie the poo!) and his food soaked in water.

Any tips?

Thanks
Anna

If this is a wild duckling you could be breaking the law by keeping it :-(  I'd find out where the local wildlife centre is and see if they would take it off your hands for you. They will be gettin ga few in over the next few weeks I think, and they are the best people to look after it. They will be able to reintroduce it to the wild, which you wouldn't be able to. Sorry to tell you this, but it really is the best thing.

we kept a lamp on one side of box for warmth and a bowl of water, they take a beak of food and then swill it down with the water

Was there something wrong with the baby? Cause if the baby was fine I would have maybe pulled him outta the water stepped away to see if mom would come back and if not then scoop him up

A couple years ago some guy was letting his 2 dogs run with out a leash and Iam sure one of em got a hold of a baby Canada goose and broke its neck- I seen it floating along then noticed it couldn't hold its head up- I scooped it up and put it on the ground- then just called someone who deals with the wildlife cause I knew I would have been charged if I took it, i couldn't just leave it, em sure they put it outta its misery- poor lil one so sad

Good luck with the lil one :)
