Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Puppy Jumping up

My 15 week old puppy treats everyone she meets as her new best friend. She gets really excited and jumps up on everyone. This isn't a huge problem as she is quite small (a border terrier) but when its small children it does make me nervous. Any ideas how I can get her to meet people calmly?

thanks

Hi moo. 15 weeks is a good age to catch this kind of behaviour.
Small dogs seem to do this more than bigger ones. Maybe its to make them easier to reach. I get staffs to stop this by frustrating their efforts. As the dog stands up on its back legs I bend forward and offer my forearm for its front paws to land on, when they have landed I pull my arm away and the dog is back on the floor. As I do this I reinforce it with a sharp "No!. Down!." and then put my hand on the dogs shoulder to keep it down. I hope this helps, its worth a try.
Regards Mick.

Thank you Mick, I will give that a go. She is such a friendly dog but I'm finding it hard when she meets strangers because for some reason they insist on sticking their fingers in her mouth saying 'ohh, shes only a baby, its normal for her to nip'. I certainly want to stop her from jumping up if I can.

Hi moo

Dont be shy about telling people its not okay for your pup to nip or jump up. I am quite sharp with people who say its okay. Whats okay is that the dog does what you want it to do and what you think is okay.
Tell them its not okay as its not fair on the dog as you are telling it one thing while they tell it another and its confusing to him. I also tell them they are making my life harder as they are interfering with my training programme which is on going for the first three years of the dogs life.

All the best Mick

Amd the rest mick!

You have to keep refreshingthe training, lol. Should have seen me this morning pulling a recalcitrant Elkhouned of 8 and nearly 11 out of the garden hedge bordering the recreation ground.

Trouble is the occupants of the garden are always throwing bones and food into the hedge, to feed foxes i suppose!

You could also try leaving her leash on and everytime she goes to jump up step on the leash, this way she is correcting herself.good luck
