Topic Dog Boards / General / Unknown breed of dog - grey pointer?
- By Louisdog [gb] Date 22.02.08 16:24 UTC
Hiya

We saw a dogs today that looks a bit like a pointer but is grey and liver coloured, sort of mottled/roan rather than patches, does anyone know what sort of dog it could be? I googled images of pointers and it didn't look like one. I can't find my dog breed encyclopedia! Just curious what breed it was.

Cheers
Alex

Maybe a German Shorthaired Pointer?

sounds like a slovakian rough haired pointer.http://www.rosetintedkennelsandstud.co.uk/kennels/slovakian-rough-haired-pointers/appearance-and-characteristics.htm I wouldnt mind one of these myself.

If it had a rough coat have a search for Italian Spinones. The colouration of the roans are similar to that of wirehaired GP but a much larger, heavier dog.

Thanks but turns out it was a German shorthaired pointer. These look lovely don't they.

ClaireyS, my first thoughts was also the Slovakian!  For anyone interested there's a talk on the European HPR breeds this weekend and I'm going to attend, should be interesting.

I'm embarrassed to not know the different between the English & German pointer - apart from the coat type, is there something obvious I could look for?

On a side note, saw an Anatolian puppy in the park today - gorgeous!

The head shape is very different (English pointers have a more accentuated stop) and English pointers have a lot more white on them.

They're s three coat types for German Pointers - here's a German Shorthaired Pointer http://www.gsp.org.uk/and a Pointer http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/104 . Interesting, isn't it? :-) ( learning about different breeds, I mean):-)

Have a browse of some of the breeders on the CD home page.  You will see that there are amazing variations in coat types.

Another difference between English and German is that the English is taller.

I didn't make it clear - I meant three differnt breed of German Pointer , not coat types. :-)

And the English pointers were not customarily docked as are the GSP and GWP

And, I believe, the german type are an HPR and the english type are used purely to point.
