My bitch is due her puppies on 28th Feb. and has had a good pregnancy, no problems at all. However, this morning she was trying to jump onto my bed (as usual) to wake me up. I noticed on the bed cover some dark discharge but no blood. This is her second litter and she had 4 lovely puppies before with no problems. I am concerned she may have had a miscarriage. Can you please adivse me.
Thanks

Personally I would take her straight to the vets!

Yes, I am going to do that but he doesnt open until 10.00am so I really just needed reassurance. Her tummy is not as firm so I am preparing myself for the worst.
Thanks

Let us know how she is - good luck!

Will do, the thing is she is as bright as a button and still playful. If she has lost them, then at least she is not too upset although I am for her.
Will keep in touch and thanks
Could it just have been the plug coming loose? Keeping fingers crossed for her (and you ;-) )

58 days is not unusual for pups to be born, so fingers crossed it's just the start -let us know what the vet said.
Hope all is well with your little girl x

Bad news I'm afraid, one pup is dead and the other pup (not sure one or two) could also be dead. Vet offered caeserian but we declined, dont want to put Mother through that with no positive outcome. She is on antibiotics which will not effect unborn pups if they are going to survive, but not looking good at all, but at least mother is well.
Thanks for all your support, but will keep in touch if any further developments.
oh that is sad, i suppose its a waiting game now for labour to start naturally.

So sorry. :(

All I would add it if she hasn't went into labour within 48 hours I would be either opting for a section or seeing if the vet can get it started with OXI. I wouldn't personally be happy to leave known dead puppies for any longer.
Hope it works out well.

I thought Oxi shouldnt be used unless labour has started?
By ISLA
Date 23.02.08 15:49 UTC
Yes, that what the vet has advised, if she has not gone naturally into labour within next 48hrs to take her along to him, he is only 1 street away from us so fingers crossed all will go well, thanks

Sometimes an experienced vet uses a very very low dose to trigger labour. It does work quite effectively as long as they know what they are doing.

aw thats such a shame, good luck and hope all goes well. x

When my Daisy's litter died at 7 weeks, my vet gave OXI in low dosage to get things moving, she passed 5 dead pups over the next 48 hours and a 6th 2 WEEKS later, thankfully she was on strong AB's as soon as we knew the litter had died.
Good luck, I hope nature takes its course so your girl can recover quickly.

I think she will have the puppies through the night or early morning. She has gone into her box and its panting. When I take her out to relieve herself she is running back into her box so I know it wont be long. Just hope it is quick and she is not in pain. Its just so heartbreaking to think she has to go through all this and have nothing at the end. I feel so helpless, but she will be smothered with love and affection throughout it all and after.

It might be worth asking your vet if there is anyone that needs a foster Mum.

Yes, I will have a word with him, he might just know or ask his colleagues, thanks for that

Hey you never know there maybe something alive in there. 58 days is very common for a westie. They rarely go over 63 days. Most are lucky to get to 63 days.

Don't give up totally on having a live puppy. This happened to one of our girls, who started a week
early. Our vet thought all the babies had died, but she did end up with 2 live puppies, who were very
small and we thought we would lose them, but they both survived and of course, stayed here with us!!
Wishing you all the best if things don't work out in a positive way, but as long as your girl is OK then this
is priority.

I really appreciate all your advice and its good to know other dog lovers have experienced this horrible situation and I am not alone. It would be wonderful if she had a live pup, just for her sake and I will remain positive until its over, and wont think otherwise. So fingers crossed, it will go all go well.

looks like you will be on call all night Isla ~ please keep us updated.
Just wishing your baby through this very soon and without any problems. xx

Isla , A good freind just pointed out that I should have actually said the best solution actually would be to take her temperature. If you can 4 times in the next 24 hours. This will be the best rule of thumb and guide as to whether you should c-section her and the possibility of anything live. If there is anything live the dead puppies can really hold the conveyor belt up.
Sometimes the simplest of methods and checks gives us the answers. I can hear puppies on small terrier breed with a stethoscope no problem. Only area you have to watch is very very close to the vulva as there is a pulse point there that can confuse you.
Puppies heart beats are very very fast compared to the adult bitch.
Good luck but just some thoughts. No disrespect to vets but some are really expereinced in the whelping area and some just have no clue and I am not sure where you vet fits into this parallel..

Isla, I had a bitch 7-8 days early about 3 1/2 years ago. 2 pups , one died and the other lived. She was 5 oz dropped to 3 oz but was a little fighter. My mum and I hand reared her. She was the only bitch I got from her mother and she herself did well in the show ring and produced me a lovely bitch 18 months ago that I adore.

Will check her temp over the next few hours, she is sleeping at the moment, has taken one of her toys into bed, and is sound asleep. As soon as wakes up will take her temp and let you know, thanks again guys!

Hi everyone, she had a good night, not too restless, but she is panting like mad now, should not be too long now. I had to cancel a Christening today as I could not bear the thought of leaving her. Will keep you all update as soon as she delivers. Thanks for all your thoughts, they are much appreciated.

Good luck, I will keep my fingers crossed for a better outcome than you think.
good luck , hope she will be ok.. keeping fingers crossed !

Hi everyone, still nothing yet, but if she hasnt delivered by tomorrow morning, I will speak to the vet about a section. It seems an awful lot for her to go through if there isnt any pups but I cant let her go on any longer. Hopefully, it wont come to that and if she delivers naturally I will post the news no matter what time it is!!

good luck with her

Hi all, took Cally to vets this morning, he checked her thoroughly, and said that she was in good shape and he was reluctanct to do section. He said discharge had stopped and antibiotics were working, he said she was healthy and we should let nature take its course. If anything changes to ring him as soon as. So its now a waiting game, any more news will be in touch. She is more settled today.

let us know x

i cant believe he sent you home, i bet youre worried sick. fingers crossed still
can the any pups heartbeat be heard with stethoscope thought that would be worth a try how many days is she today? would have thought heartbeats could be heard now hope everything is ok you must be worried sick

they were due in another 3 days, so could be a while yet.
By Blue
Date 25.02.08 22:32 UTC

I was going to ask if the vet had a listen. It is very easy to pick them up.
Fingers crossed.
