A family friend of my OH (lady in her 60s) has just got 2 Bedlington pups.  I know to get 2 (not litter mates) at the same time = bad idea but what's done is done.
I have never seen this breed in the pup stage but both these pups are almost black with tans bits, mainly on the chest.  If you part their hair it is the more familiar grey colour underneath.  The breeders told her to get them trimmed/shaved at 6 months to encourage the grey adult coat to come through.
Are they the right colour???  And is the grooming advice correct?

So I guess they could turn out any colour then seeing as they appear to be a mix of all sorts of colours at the minute, but blue is most likely.  They do look like some of the pups from the link above.
I haven't had much to do with the breed so was unaware of their colour 'metamorphosis'!!

Yes Jen, you're right there!  After having black toy poodles almost all my life, I bought a silver girl 15 years ago.  She was jet black, and when her face was clipped for the first time, she looked like she was wearing a mask!  Most odd!

Bedlies look like lab pups when born LOL  Straight Black/Brown/Liver  Coats.   Then the curl starts and the coat lightens.  Black and tans will lighten until they are blue, the tan usually disappears.    Young dogs often go very light until they mature, then they get darker again, but they change shade all the time depending on hormones and the weather

The pup should be started with visits to the grooming salon at about 12 weeks for a puppy clip.  You would not want to leave it for 6 months,it would be a real mess!   Pups from show breeders usually have their first clip before leaving home and advice would be about every 6 weeks after.

A good few of the terrier breeds dramatically change colour from being tiny - Soft Coated Wheatens look like dark brown boxers when they are born!

Dill - she is taking them before 6 months, sorry I didn't make that clear.
The breeder said that they need a 'really good clip' at about 6 months to allow the adult coat to come through.
I hope she realises how much grooming might be involved although I think she plans to keep them trimmed short.

They are sooooo cute though and really friendly.

Malinois are born very, very dark brown all over, and as they grow they lighten up and become Fawn, Red (or in some cases, Grey) with black mask and black ears. Red Sable Papillons are virtually black at birth before turning red a few months on.

Kerry Blues are black when they're born :-)

Some Brown Spanish water dogs that are chocolate at birth fade up to a minky or donkey brown.....some blacks fade up to a silvery grey colour...some golds fade up to cream.....

My breed are born black looking like moles and gradually lighten, in fact the black on the feet takes longest to go.

At about the time they leave home they are just all fleecy and oatmeal in colour and the ears are likely to be pale.

Around three to four months the top coat starts to come through first noticed as a triangle on the top surface of the curled tail (so you notice it when they uncurl it when relaxed) and of course the tip is black.  Then the harness mark (the 2 inch band of light coloured guard hair comes in over the shoulders and more black peppering appears on the back as the black tipped guard coat comes through.

the black muzzle should be that way all the way through, only fading a bit with advancing middle/old age.

Oh not my breed but young finnish Spitz pups that are a golden fiery red as adults are mousy brown as pups.

Cesky Terriers are born black or black and tan and finish up varying shades of grey, with or without cream points. My neighbour has them, and they are gorgeous!

border pups are born dark too so knowing what color to put on the registration forms isnt easy

A neighbour used to breed Chows and when I visited the puppies one day I was fascinated to learn that their coats start out black and gradually turn red and their tongues do the opposite, starting out pink and turning blue.

Gosh, I had no idea - I remember being startled when I saw my first 10 week old Yorkie pups, but I didn't realise no many breeds started out a different colour. Cavaliers darken with age with the rubies and blenheims, but basically what comes out is what you get! :-)

I find the ruby doesn't darken with age, but darkens with length. I had my Cavalier clipped recently & she was back to puppy colour. :)

If possible it's best not to clip a Cavalier, but I know sometimes you're stuck doing it, specially if it's been done in the past. :-) My blenheim boy is a beautiful rich tan, and you're right, I think it's partly the length of his coat. :-)

Wow so many breeds that I guess look totally different as pups than they would as adults.  Didn't realise there were so many.  And I never thought about the difficulties in registering what colour they would be!!

My dog was clipped as she had to be shaved anyway because of an operation on her leg.

Lots of Fawn pug pups are born sort of tiger stripped - it came as a great shock to me when our first pug was born, as none of the books I had read mentioned it.  The black stripes disappear in the first week, leaivng the expected fawn.  However, quite a few of the fawns not born stripey are very dark indeed at birth - my last litter I hgad difficulty convincing the vet that 2 of them were fawns not black!  They ususally lighten up nicely by about 6 week,s but Pipsqueak kept his dark colour for ages.

Following on from Gwen and our breeds stripey/dark pups. One of my current litter still has slight brindling to her front leg, and shes just over three weeks! Hope it fades! Should imagine it'll go once the darker patches turn to the lighter adult colouring.

I should imagine it will blend in eventually.  It was worrying when Pipsqueak was still very dark at 8 weeks old, but once past 10 weeks he lightended up really well, and is very pale now, but I did think for a while he was going to be a "smutty coloured pug!  I don't know any other breed who have this striped thing which fades out, but it takes you by surprise if no one has warned you!

Yeah I wont worry too much at this stage, in the last litter we had a bitch that was very dark but when the owners sent '1st birthday' pictures shes just as beautiful and light as her mother. Always reasurring to know!
