hello Riggs
calming down bull terriers is relatively easy, but a lot of patience and perseverance. If you want him to do something do not give him any alternative, even if it takes all night. When you want the dog to do something make him sit and listen to you while looking at you. Dont let his concentration wander to anything around him. Keep this attention all the time for every comand. When out walking, in the house any time you speak to him he must listen to you or his world stops until he does. When you are making him sit to listen and he gets fed up and lies down pick him up. I have made my dogs sit and stay for up to an hour until they do listen. I hold them by the loose skin under the chin to keep eye contact. Bull terriers can be very stubborn, I never shout or hit them, it does'nt work. I will scruff them to establish the pecking order but thats only a couple of times at the beginning of the relationship. Speak quietly to them I find they listen harder to whatyour saying.
What age is your dog?.

Hello Mick, thanks for your reply,he is 3 and a half,he's pretty well behaved at home and out walking, its just when he goes to a show he goes into head down ass up mode and its as though no-one else is even there!!He won't make eye contact with you and pulls you up and down the mat like an idiot!I wouldn't mind but he still gets placed even with this bad behaviour so if he behaved in the ring he'd get even better results. Its really frustrating......I'm willing to try anything, just wish some-one would wave a magic wand over him to make him behave!!!!

Hello Tony
Sounds to me like he is just a typical bully. Like I say perseverance. He probably knows that he is the centre of attention in the ring, and that you are on your best behaviour and dont want to tell him off. Bullys mature between 4 & 5 so he should settle soon. If he is good eveywhere else, he is probably just having a laugh as they do.
Regards Mick.

Hi Mick,my name is Michelle, not Tony,by the way!!Thanks for the advise, lets just hope he calms down in the next 6 months or so then.
Ithink you must have hit the nail right on the head though,I think he definately enjoys taking the "mick" out of me!!(if you'll pardon the punn!!!)
Nobody said all this was going to be easy, having said that I love the breed and wouldn't trade him for ANY other dog..thanks again mick, take care
