Topic Dog Boards / General / pup having first season

I have a 8month old staff which has just come into her first season and just wanted to know how long it will last?
I was advised by our vet to let her have her first season, before having her done.

A season is normally 21 days but can be slightly longer so she needs to be kept away from male dogs for 4 weeks to play safe. She cannot then be spayed until some time after her season, my vet says 3-4 months later, not sooner as they can't spay bitches that are about to come into season, are in season or have recently been in season.

Cheers thanx for that!
I feel so sorry for her at the moment as we are having to keep her in the hall, due to us having a baby.
So hopefully it won't be no longer then 21 days.

Why are you keeping her in the hall,? when mine are in season they still are part of the family and allowed in kitchen and living room, it does not make any difference whether she is in season or not.   The pup will think she is being punished for something and will not know what.

I am not critisising you, just wondering if she usually is allowed in different places in the home why you have changed the routine.

Just because we have a 7 month old baby and it is not very hygienic for a baby to be crawling around in blood??
The dog is not left out and is taken for plenty of walks.
She is norm in the hall when we are out and at night.
plus i'm in the hall most of the time playing with her, as our hall is very large.
Which drives my over half crazy, with all the noise!

The bleeding part won't last the whole 21 one days most smaller breeds it is a about 7-10 day BUT you have to remember importantly the season itself  lasts approx 21 days, when the bleeding dries up this is when she is generally at her most fertile so be very careful when walking her etc for the whole time.

Just a thought, if you have a big house why dont you 'section' of a large part so that baby can have its part and puppy can have its share. You will find that your pup will keep herself pretty clean anyway. as I said just a thought.

sorry I should have said section of part of the living area!

I would if i could, but the front room and the hall are the only places which have wooden flooring.
And the rest of the house has very light coloured carpet.

is the front room where you spend most of your time.

yeah!

What about doggy sanitary knickers?  They would protect your carpet for when you want her to be in the room with you?  I've never used them but I wouldn't leave them on an unattended dog - particularly a pup, but they might be worth considering?  Poor pup must be a bit confused as to why she isn't allowed in the room with you.

We used small child pants or small boxer shorts!! Worked just as well
