Well this first weeks has gone really fast.:);)
Today me and OH went back to see the litter again and we have chosen the puppy we want and we pick him up next Saturday.
After much heated debait we had chosen Reuban as his name so the bredder is starting to call him that now.
Kennel name will be Christmas Cracker, because they were born on Boxing Day.
Any advise as how to do the into's to my other two dogs would be very welcome.
One 4 1/2years neuted male and one entire at 18 1/2 months.

Wow I'm really excited for you! What breed are you getting? I'm guessing a newfoundland? I got another dog 2 weeks ago although he is 9 months old and already bigger than the girl we already had. When we introduced them we left them to play whilst we were in so they were supervised and if it got too silly we separated them. At night and when we are out we still are keeping them separate and its only 2 weeks on I feel ready to put them together unsupervised so will start doing this gradually this week. Are you going to be using a crate with your new puppy? I think its important to make sure he has a space away from your other dogs when he's sleeping, eating etc. Although I've not had first hand experience of introducing a tiny pup to adult dogs (as I said my new boys 9 months) friends/family have generally found it easier introducing a young pup rather than an older pup/adult as there are less fights over dominance etc.

I didn't find it a problem when i got my pup, and introducing was easy with the other 2 adults dogs. I found it harder when we got an older dog
I am getting a new pup in 4 weeks time, I will let them meet in the garden . More space! My 2 are so good that i have no worries. Like you im sure tha your other 2 dogs are fine with others. I do find it helpful having a crate so the pup can take some time out.

Enjoy the new pup!

Yes i do have a large cage i was going to use for sleeping, safe place etc.
Whats the best way to do the 1st intro?
I shut my dogs in the kitchen/dining room when i am not there and would have to go though to get to the garden.
Do you think it best that i give the pup some time to become used to the new house new smells etc before i let my boys out to meet him ( one at a time of couse) or do you think i should take him stright to the garden and then let them meet up as my boys will be exited to see us when we return and i would like them to calm down a bit 1st. it useally only takes a few minute for them to go back to sleep!!!
I was going to put a new vet bed inside the cage for the puppy to sleep on but i was not going to close the door do you think this would be okay?
Of cause that would all depend on the dogs first reactions to each other.

In answer to your question pinkbrady, yes its another newf.

When my puppy came home we introduced her to my older dog (9 year old Leo)ourside our house.
First we went in and said hello to Sani and she got to smell the puppy smell on us.(our neighbour stayed in the car with the pup)
Then we all went to get the puppy from the car and Sani got to smell the puppy and puppy got to smell Sani (pup was on my mums lap).
Sani is pretty calm and puppy was very brave puppy so soon the puppy was on the floor saying hello (as we saw both were happy to meet properly)
Sani loved the puppy untill she realized she is actually coming home with us :)! You could see her face saying -you not serious that thing is actually coming to live here-!

First few weeks Sani was pretty cold towards Sasha and would not for example let Sasha come and sleep with her.
With Sani we were pretty sure she knew how to be with the pup as she has had a litter of her own and has always been gentle but firm with other puppies she has met.
Sometimes it feels Sani is the one who actually knows what she is doing (it has been nealy 10 years we last had a puppy) and Sasha does listen to her and knows her place.

With two young males to introduce I would be careful they do not scare the puppy by being too keen.
Maybe you should bring them out one by one starting with the easier more calm one as the puppy might not be used to strange dogs either.

Good luck!

I just left the crate door open and put some chews etc in there. She soon realized it was a good place to be. Now a year on if the door is not open she is there pulling it an barking to get in it.

When we are out we leave the door open she sleeps in there when we are out even though she has the run of the house.

I wish i had done it with my other dog

> Whats the best way to do the 1st intro?

very very calmly....

generally in the past we've gone in, said hello to the resident dog then either kept a hold of the resident as puppy is brought in or taken resident to the puppy who has been put in the crate.

when our Kizzy arrived we put her in her crate then brought our mastiff through to meet her through the cage. he would not move from beside it, with theis rapt expression and a lovely gentle waggy tail (not to excited but obviously happy). then she was let out and we got him to lie down to speak to her, very civilised and nice, he restrained himself very well. he clearly thought she was the best present EVER!

similarly when Tio was introduced to Kiz dad brought him in, held him on his lap while she had a good sniff (he went excitedly mental but thats just him). Kiz is an increadibly calm dog and she just lay down and was like "ok, new thing...". when tio got down he ran about like mad, played with her a little, then fell asleep (as pups do).

just be calm and watchful in case someones nose is out of joint with the new entry

as to closing the cage, its up to you, we always have because its safer for the pup when your not there- wires are chewable and not always puppy proofable, someone is guarenteed to accidentally leave something about thats nice for a nibble... everyone of our pups has hated the cage for a day or two and now (as adults) gets very upset if they can;t get in their cage. and yes to the vet bed, great stuff.

LOL I must be unique

When I brought Wukee home he travelled on the front seat in a cat box fastened to the seat belt. I let my older dogs into the the house, then collected Wukee from the car & took him indoors, then out into the garden & put him down. Rjj ran away(this is what all my male collies have done)Jessie gave him the once over & a wash, the Cavaliers totally ignored him, the kittens mildly hissed & that was that.

After a day Reg the Tom kitten was his best mate, Jessie was acting like his mum & the others ignoring him.

Now he plays with Rjj & Jessie, Joedee(Cavalier)is just starting playing with him, Reg is still wrestling with him(on Reg's instigation)& Jaq(the Queen kitten)plays with him from above or ambushes him in the garden & the oldest Kaycee just about acknowledges him

I've never done anything else with my new puppies & never had a problem

He does sleep & eat in his crate & if I go out Rjj & Wukee are crated so that they cannot skylark whilst I am out
