We have been looking at a few as I hate washing our dogs beds as our clothes end up being all hairy afterwards :-O

Anyway, we have looked at "Tuffies" beds, has anyone got any experience of these or similar beds?

I have a "Really Tough Tuffies " bed  that was bought for my very dirty and destructive dogs, and it is the only dog bed they have not managed to destroy one way or the other.  However, it cost more than buying a human single bed, but they do promise that it will last your lifetime, not just the dog's!!  They will also replace it if the dog ruins it.  As well as seeming to be indestructible, it is remarkably easy to keep clean, can be hosed down if neccessary although I find the mud just falls off, and despite the price I have just ordered another one, and  when the funds allow will get them all one each.  They  only do them in one size at present, which is about right for a dog up to the size of a large labrador.  I haven't tried their other beds which are like large tough duvets as my dogs are chewers and Tuffies don't claim these type of beds are indestructible, but they can be hosed down and look like they may be a good cheaper alternative if your dog is just dirty and hairy .

Neither of our dogs are really chewers so that isn't the main concern for us but because they are longhaired i can't stand it when their beds look hairy so I put them through the wash and hey presto all of our clothes then become hairy too! :-O

I have found a couple of similar styles to Tuffies on ebay and just wondered if anyone had used something similar. :-)

We have had the tuffie waterproof beds for the last 2 and a half years and they are the best beds ever bought.  Yes they are expensive but after buying loads of other type of duvet style beds that were for ever in the washing machine, then they would go lumpy, then the zips would break we decided to give them a go, with 5 newfies they have been tested really well . No hair sticks to them and if the dog is wet/damp it does not penitrate down into the stuffing while the dog is lying on it, it stays on the top and dries ever so quickly

I wipe them over once a day with the mop and then once a month or (sooner) if their has been an accident they are taken outside and jet washed.

They come up like brand new every time.  Well worth every penny. Forget about Ebay yes some of them say they are waterproof but have purchased some myself in the past and believe me within 1 month they were in the bin.

Have you tried brushing your dog beds Angels with a rubber curry comb or a slicker brush? It brings all the dog hair off, we do our vetbeds daily with them and also give them a real going over before washing and no more hairy clothes or blocked pipes.
I use a horse rubber curry comb which are about £1.50 from equine outlets, they are also good for getting dead hair off the dog too.

That might be an idea!

We have gone through so many beds that I really want to get it right this time!

We don't like the vet bed, I have found it the worst in terms of how much hair it collects and how old it looks after a couple of washes!

I have Tuffies now after years of different beds. They are the best beds we have ever had . I wish I had bought them years ago. I have the Waterproof type.

I have the woven Tuffies bed and it is fantastic. I vacuum it every day, turn it once a week and take it upstairs every two weeks into the bath - shower it over, scrub with persil liquid and a bit of savlon disinfectant, rinse off then leave it stood up standing to dry off in the bath for about 10 mins with an old towel underneath to catch the wetness then stand next to the radiator for 1/2 hour until completely dry. They are very good but I ordered the silver grey coloured to match my kitchen decor and when it arrived its more of a grey/green colour.

would these be suitable for say 5 week old pups?

I'm a bit of a dog bed shopaholic :-) I've got the tuffies, kudos and some ebay beds. The tuffies look good but the dogs don't sleep on them much, I don't think they like the beanbag feel of them, or the noise they make. I (and the dogs) like the kudos loungers, I have the oval ones in their plastic beds and one to fit the back of the car too. I bought some beds off ebay that have removable waterproof/fleece covers, the dogs really like them- and they were a fraction of the price of tuffies or kudos - however don't look as if they will last long. I've had them about a year now and washed the covers every week or so and they are starting to lose their plastic backing whereas the tuffies and kudos ones still look as good as new. The moral of the story is you get what you pay for :-D If I need to buy more I'll stick with Kudos.

I have narrowed it down to Kudos or Tuffies......just need to convince the hubby now ;-)

We have replaced our beds virtually every other month as I can't stand anything that looks tatty...I know its not exactly sensible to be like this with 2 long haired dogs! :-)

Before you splash out on either I would do a bit of a test run with a cheap bean bag. If your dogs like the feel of the bean bag they'll like the tuffies, but if like mine they don't like the air filled feel then I'd go with the kudos loungers. Both are very easily hoovered and/or wiped down and look great :-)

I bought a waterproof bed on ebay through UK Pets.  It is great and you can just hose it down, or give it a wipe with a damp  cloth.  They come in 4 different sizes and have a lift out waterproof cushion.  Strong and durable and  I think   they will be cheaper than Tuffies.  Great for when they come in from their  walks all muddy and run straigt into their bed.

Unfortunately not Barbara.  They had a stand at LKA about 3 years ago and I bought them there.  They were supposed to be about £60 each I think but I haggled them down to £80 for two as I was paying cash :-D .  Two Pharaohs can get in one both stretched out so I'm not sure what size they are but plenty big enough.

The beds are a foam matress on the bottom, with a beanbag filled outer ring.  It's all covered in extremely hard wearing imitation leather outer which has a zip running round the outside (for removing the outer ring) and one across the underneath (for removing the foam insert) so the outer cover can be put in the washing machine.  I've never had to wash mine in the machine yet as a wipe over with a cloth gets it clean.  And there's no smell as the doggy odour cannot penetrate the cover.  The outer ring is very well stuffed so it makes for a cozy but quite rigid bed and I've found it great for Rumour to get on and off as she's becoming a little arthritic and is a little stiff at times.  They survived Gideon as a puppy too :-) as, although he never chewed that much, he did dig at them a bit.  The ends of the zips are concealed too so there's nothing the dog can get hold of to start chewing on.

just for a quick cheap alternative, we got old clean double duvet folded it and sewed it into shape , brought some thick waterproof material from the market, sewed and sealed the waterproof cover over the duvet completely, and have been using it for 5 years with our labs, its great covers the whole of the boot (estate) and keeps the mud, sand etc off the rest of the car, dogs love it and we just wipe it clean, made life so much easier. no smell no mess

I bought a waterproof one from ebay for the car and it is so easy to keep clean.  It is just like a waterproof duvet and cost approx £30.  I also picked one up for my dog walker that has one side fleece and one side waterproof.  Mine is totally sealed with no buttons, zips or poppers.

wow.....beds to match a kitchen....ive heard it all now ! :) wonder if they do "slobber white" in their colour range??

seller was kingscrags.  They are down as boot liners but fine for beds.

Are any of the beds mentioned so far suitable for year round outdoor use?  I have a couple I picked up at shows that stay outside so my arthritic boy doesn't have to lie on cold/hard ground (he likes to spend a lot of time outside) but one is now in need of replacement.  I don't mind how much it costs as long as it is hardwearing and able to withstand the elements.

I don't think these ones would last too long if in constant outdoors use.  They are good for the price but probably not what you are looking for.

I thought those ones might not withstand much outdoor use but, at that price, I think I might get one for use in the car anyway :-)

Jules, would your boy use a hammock? If you get a heavyweight canvas it would probably last a fair amount of time outdoors. We have one that's a different style to the link so there's a few to choose from.

Just an update on  the waterproof beds, I ordered 3 from Kingscrags on ebay. They arrived this morning and I'm not impressed at all, the material is very thin - doesn't look like it will last long. They've been down for 4 hours and already they're all wrinkled. I would definitely recommend Kudos over these ones anyday. There is no comparison in quality - the kudos ones feel nicer, the cover doesn't move or wrinkle or make that horrible cheap gagoul noise the Kingscrags ones are doing. £55 wasted ....but then it is my own fault - I'm a compulsive dog bed buyer :-)

p.s. I will say that Kingscrags beds arrived quickly and I did get a slight discount buying 3 - but still I would recommend people buy Kudos or Tuffies instead.

If you really want to be an obsessive bed buyer join me in my love of these beds Tigger2. I buy the microsuede and the hair doesn't stick much. I have two XL rectangulars and two large sofas. :)

Naughty Lori, shouldn't put temptation in my path. I don't actually need any new beds at all, but got carried away with how cheap the ebay ones were...lol. I've just looked at that link and thought mmmm I'll get one of the xxl oblongs to try it. $199 - thought that was fair enough but $149 postage :-o  Did you get yours in this country?

Nope I'm going to continue to tempt you. The dollar is so worthless that I managed to buy and ship them for less than some smaller donut beds I found over here. And yes, I do ship them to the North East so not that different than Scotland. Here's the clincher, shipping multiple beds is the same as shipping one. I got together with a friend and bought 4 of them so we shared shipping costs. If you do find yourself in need :) find a friend that wants one and ask for quote to ship the number you want. You'll get a better deal then if you ordered online.

I gave into temptation the last time Lori posted that link and bought an XL bed for the living room.  The dogs liked it so much, I ended up buying a second one soon after!  It's the only dog bed I have bought (and I'm another compulsive bed buyer as well ;-) ) that they choose to go to instead of the sofas so OH and I can have our furniture back at last!! :-)

Well I have ordered a large one from an ebay member who comes very highly recommended so I will let you know how I get on... :-)

Someone i know has had them for a few years and says they look as good as new. We tried the dogs on the pillow type beds but they won't lay on them, they like the feel of a surrounded bed I guess. If they are no good i will order from kudos who were very helpful and said they would send them vat free for me as i live in Guernsey! :-)
