Dad wants one for his 50th - anyone know anything about these? He doesn't have a tow bar on his car which I thik makes a difference as to which model you buy! Drives a Ford Mondeo Titanium model.

Hi,
Providing the car doesn't have a split tailgate, where the back windscreen opens like a window, you will be ok. We bought one from Halfords for about £60 but its now no use because we have a split tailgate.

I did a lot of riding in California and started out with a rack mounted on the back of the car but I never felt the bike was that secure with it. I switched to roof racks and loved those. If I was going to regularly transport my bike I would go for roof racks. If it was a couple times a year I would consider the rear mounted. If you go for a rear mounted model it's worth bringing the car in to see if the rack will fit without rubbing on any of the paintwork. There a bit like shoes, you have to try them on and one size doesn't fit all.

For cars with a towbar I'd recommend a MaxxRaxx, but for cars without one that's not a lot of help!

You get high up and lower down type ones. Depends on where the brake lights are on the car. My car has low down brake lights so I would need one of the higher up type. I would go to somewhere like Halifords with your dad and his car 'cos they can fit them to the car to check the best model. Argos also sells them.
