Under the Kennel Club General Code of Ethics:

9.  Owners will not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers etc

As a breeder is in effect an owner until a puppy is re-homed, then how do puppy retailers /pet stores such as can be found in Manchester and soon to be in Bradford, manage to acquire pedigree puppies of numerous different breeds from so called approved breeders for re-sale?

Because unless the Pups if KC registered are transfered to the Retailers ownership the Kennel Club have no way to know that this is how they have been sold.

When this happened in my own numerically small breed we were able with the new owners help (they had joined our breed club) prove that a BYB was selling commercially and the Kennel Club stopped their registration privileges.

I believe that is the reason most puppies in such places are not in fact KC registered but registered with an alternative PET registry interestingly set up by the former owner of said Puppy emporiom.

A lot of my own puppy owners never transfer the registration into their own name (maybe half do) so those buying from such places are very unlikely to tell the Kennel Club that they bought their pup from a retail outlet, as they are unlikely to even know or care that this is against KC code of ethics.

i've had puppy enquireys 2 years in advance from a guy going to collenge for 2 years to study animal managment before setting up his business, when asked what the business was he replied pet store, hydrotheraphy, dog grooming etc but the pups he planned from my pup would be sold seperately not through the store.

others should be wearned, he obv didnt realise all my pups not kept by myself go endorced.

Have also heard from the KC today as follows :
"The KC code of Ethics is not law - it is the KC's guidelines as to expected levels of behaviour. As far as I am aware, licenced breeders ( that is those breeders who breed more than four litters per year) are subject to certain selling restrictions under the Breeding and Sales of Dogs Welfare Act. However,the act does not apply to unlicensed breeders."

Personally I wouldnt consider a puppy to be a pedigree puppy, unless KC registered and quite how retail outlets such as those glamorised by live websites can legitimately describe any non KC registered puppies as such is beyond me. These retail outlets approved breeders therefore, must (as has been said here) be no more than BYB's/unethical breeders.

So how do we best deter potential owners from acquiring their puppy from such retail outlets. Admittedly the conditions may be better, but surely this is no more than glamorised puppy farming?

Does anyone here believe that puppies should be allowed to be sold via pet shops/retail outlets and have you ever purchased one?

Interestingly, I approached the large retail outlet with an enquiry as to how I may become one of their approved breeders - as yet no reply!

you will probably find that their pedigree pups are registered with an alternativee to the KC.

******** in Manchester do not sell KC registered puppies anymore, only DLRC registered ones.
