Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Ban on breeding of hairless dog breeds
- By Brainless [gb] Date 07.02.08 14:42 UTC
I sometimes look into a Polish canine site/forum and today noticed a post that from 05.02.2008 in the following German states: 1) NRW Nordrhein-Westfalen, 2) Hessen, 3) Berlin the breeding of all hairless breeds of dogs has been banned.

Does anyone in Cresteds know anything about this.

Thin end of the wedge what.  People thought it would just be BSL re so called dangerous dogs.  what will be next no short legged breeds no flat faced ones.

How Bizzarre??

Like you say, whatever next?
- By Soli Date 07.02.08 15:33 UTC
It's rediculous isn't it Barbara.  The do-gooders in the UK have been on about banning hairless dogs for years.  It all stems from people misunderstanding the genetics of the breeds involved I think.

I wonder if they're banning the breeding of hairless cats too?

That is absolutely crazy??? The weird thing is that cresteds are quite a healthy breed, ours all had long and healthy lives. Why ban breeding a healthy breed and presumably let people breed dogs plagued with health problems. The only problems our hairless dogs had was the odd plook - maybe they should ban breeding children as they turn into spotty teenagers :-D

Germany banned a lot already years ago, such as white cats and rex cats.

I think one of the arguments against the hairless breeds (there are quite a few not just cresteds which have a long haired version), is dentition, or lack thereof.
- By Soli Date 07.02.08 15:45 UTC
Again, it's a misunderstood thing isn't it.  Plenty of toy breeds lose their teeth early - or have missing teeth right from the start!  As do a lot of the finer muzzled breeds.  Pharaohs and BSDs are just two that I can think of that I've had in depth dealings with.

Hi Brainless, would you mind me cross-posting this to a crested list i am on please? I have heard nothing, but wonder if others in the same breed may have! Thank you...cheryl.

But not the healthy Selkirk Rex!  ;-)

Do white cats now not have to be hearing tested in Europe to be shown - FIFe rules?
- By Goldmali Date 07.02.08 22:42 UTC
I honestly don't know about hearing testing, Christine. I do know though at least a few years ago there were officials checking cats arriving at shows in Germany to make sure no white cats were allowed.... Can't find any info on FIFE's website.

" All white cats must be tested by a Vet before they can be shown or used for breeding under CA/FIFe rules. More sensitive tests are available involving anaesthesising the cat and inserting electrodes under the head skin, but kittens over six weeks with deficient hearing can be identified at home by a number of tests."

I'm sure it says on a FIFe entry form that a white cat can only be entered with a current certificate of hearing pass.

Hve just received this from someone in France with friends in one of these German states, still trying to find out particular reasons so please bear with me...cheryl
Hi Yes it is true it is not their kennel club its their government that is doing this they have started to take bitch's away from their home and spay them and then take them back to their owner if you are found to do breeding with hairless you can breed pp to pp that is ok they say its because they are a exotic breed and get to many abnormal puppies bull **** I say the is a meeting in March with the kennel club and government so until then everyone is worried what they will do even the Kennel club can not give a answer to why they are doing this.  This was going on 6years ago too but they did not enforce it but now they are I was asked by a breeder if I would help her sell her puppies but its hard selling them myself that is why I am not having puppies now The is too many puppies at the moment the breed is not that popular and I don't want to bring puppies into the world not knowing what to do with them

Problem is the Mexican and Peruvian hairless breeds only come in hairless I believe so the powder puff route is not way out at all.

You do get coated Mexican's, according to a british breeder's website. They look a bit like a slim collie to me.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 08.02.08 20:14 UTC
Are they shown or considered non standard like long coat GSD of fluffies in Pem Corgis?
- By Polo Date 08.02.08 20:37 UTC
From reading the breed standard I think they are like longcoat GSDs and the coated bitch isn't shown. edited to add, nice picture, is that you with one of your elkhounds?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 08.02.08 20:47 UTC
Yep that is me and Lexi when she won POTY stakes at Windsor.  She is 4 1/2 now.

Oh gorgeous. Such a beautiful breed, very natural. If you know what I mean. They just wouldn't suit me, but I love them and all the spitz types. You must have been proud of her! So is she still being shown?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 08.02.08 20:54 UTC
She went on to become a champion, and had her first litter 14 months ago, and one of her daughters got the RCC at LKA as puppy.

I do like the fact the breed is shown completely natural, and is of a natural confoirmation.

OMG.  That is horrid.

The crested is a wonderful breed, and to ban the breeding of hairless dogs.  I can never understand this.  Never.

I am still trying to wrap my head around the banning of the bully breeds, here in Ontario, which apparently has reasons.  Yet the banning of breeding Hairless dogs, wow.....

This not only affects the crested, but the Xolo as well.  Oh my.
