does anyone know where workers stand with the placement of surveillance camera's in the work place IE do they have to inform you that the camera's are there. that you are to be recorded etc. surely workers must have some rights regarding this........
I understand that you have to be informed of their presence. I also understand that there are limitations on where they can be placed. the law states that they may not be placed in areas where there is a "reasonable expectation of privacy". this means that they should not be in rest rooms, toilets, chaging facilities etc. I work in a hi tec hospital, and there are cams in all corridors, and outdoors but not in any changing areas or staff rooms. If they are not in sensitive areas then there is no reason to fear their presence. Obviously if they are in toilets or changing facilities then that is different, and illegal.
Im pretty sure that they are allowed to do that (except in toilets/changing room etc) but under Data Protection Laws you are allowed to see them

where i work, they are not allowed in rest rooms and toilets. ie. private rest areas
but, you are not allowed to view any footage if there is another person, in the picture.
if you want to view them they have to be sent away for the non related personel/member of public's
face to be blanked, if they haven't given permission to be viewed.
that is what it states in our DPA policy.
Hope this helps.

yes thanks all for the replies. wasn't to sure if they were allowed to hide them or not. obviously from your comments then they're not... which is good to know

I know your post is about surveillance cameras but there may also be regulations to prohibit cell phones that have cameras in them. Many public places now advise they should be left in your car. This after deviants were found using theirs in children's change rooms and pointing them up under toilet stall walls. Deviants come in all ages and gender.
