Topic Dog Boards / General / contraceptive pill for dogs?????
- By pinkbrady [gb] Date 07.02.08 07:12 UTC
Hi I'm following on form the new dog and neuturing threads. As I posted on the new dog thread my 8 month old boy is booked in to be castrated next week but after reading the advice I think I would prefer to wait until he is at least a year, possibly even 18 months as I have a slow matruing breed. As I don't want to breed I do want him to be castrated but don't want to solve one problem and cause another as a result. On another forum on a similar thread I have seen advice suggesting giving the bitch 'the pill' to prevent her season happening. Yhis is not something I have heard of before and I am dubious. Surely meddling with the hormones in a young bitch will cause problems for them? (I will just add my bitch is 15 months so past the 1 year stage)

Why noy have your boy chemically castrated if you don't want to interfere with your bitches hormones?

I have used the contraceptive injection on a couple of my bitches with great success.  BUT I don't breed.  I wouldn't use it on a bitch I was considering breeding with at a later date.

Arn't human and dog hormones different? so therefore giving a bitch "the pill" wouldn't work (haven't heard of one for dogs so assuming human?)

However it does remind of of when our youngest decided to chew up a full box (3 months worth) of 'the pill' I never found about 19 of them so assume she had consumed them.  Didn't seem to have given her any ill effects, although try explaining to the doctoor why you need another pack!!!!

Delvesteron is the hormone injection used for delaying and controlling seasons.  I did use this on my first bitch, but I would not advise it's use on bitches you want to use fro breeding as it can adversely affect their reproductive organs and capacity.

How old is your bitch, if she has already had seasons then I would spay her in preference to castrating the dog, as there are more health benefits to spaying a bitch than castrating a dog.

To be honest boarding your boy with relatives (or the girl if you trust them implicitly) is the best option.

Remember a castrated dog can remain fertile for months after castration.

Yes there is one for dogs. Essentially you start giving it at the start of a season to stop it. Not at all as common as it was years ago though, the injection is more common now.

Hi Brainless in response to your post my bitch is 15 months and has had her first season. However, my bitch had a severe reaction to a previous op which is likely to happen again and as spaying is a bigger op the vet thinks the reaction would be more severe. We do want to get her spayed but I am teacher so would rather wait until the summer holidays then should she have any complications I will be off work. After looking at all the posts and advice and the link you provided on another thread I am going to speak to the vet about an injection to prevent her season, have my bitch spayed in summer and will still have my boy castrated but wait until he is at least a year old.

have you considered a vasectomie (sp)? that shouldn;t mess with your boys growth (i don;t think, can anayone confirm?) but prevents any problems arising.

Just so that yoru aware there is an increased risk of Pyometra with the jabs, and this would necesitate an emergency spay rather than an elective one.
