Topic Dog Boards / General / Brussel Griffon, boy do I feel stupid!
- By Gemini05 Date 01.02.08 10:11 UTC
Oh dear, this morning down at the school a parent told me she had a Brussel Griffon, 'A Brussel Griffon!' I said, never heard of it, sounds like a cross breed, so I went into one cursing people that cross breed, now looking on the internet I see that there is such a breed!! Oh dear oh dear I do feel really stupid now, I will let her now this afternoon that I was wrong, with my tail between my legs!!! he he he!
- By Carrington Date 01.02.08 10:39 UTC
:-D Must admit there are soooooo many breeds out there that most of us have never seen, let alone heard of, so don't beat yourself up, just hold tongue tightly until you know for sure. ;-)

I've always just been 100% focused on the breed/breeds that I am showing or supporting, I've often looked a real bozo at not recognising other breeds and even pedigree dogs are often not to breed standard so I've often 'accidently' insulted people by asking what breed they have. :-D But we live and learn.

As long as you put the woman right, and don't leave her worried.

Aww don't feel too stupid.  It's not known as a Brussels Griffon in the UK - it's the Griffon Bruxellois here.

It's not quite spelt like that but yes it is a breed, he, he!  http://www.champdogs.co.uk/guided/toy_griffon-bruxellois.html
- By Brainless [gb] Date 01.02.08 11:49 UTC
You have the excuse though as in the UK we call them by their proper name 'Griffon Bruxellois' I think they call them Brussels Griffon in the states, though could be wrong?

There are a lot of little known breeds,a dn thsi si wehre my argument about not needign to crossbreed comes in.  If peopel actually did soem reserach tehy coudl ahve soemthign unusual adn uncommon that breeds truw and hopefully help stop a numerically small breed becomign unviable/extinct.

Yes, like that little terrier breed in the newspapers the other day, (sorry forgotten it's name) which is becoming very rare. Gorgeous little dog, I almost felt like snapping one up. :-)
- By ShaynLola Date 01.02.08 12:22 UTC
Dandie Dinmont?  Or Glen of Imaal? I think both have been mentioned recently as being vulnerable due to falling numbers.

I adore Dandies...probably the only terrier I would consider owning. It'd be a shame to see these breeds die out :-(
- By Brainless [gb] Date 01.02.08 12:41 UTC
There were two lovley Dandy bitches at my first Rigncraft classes many years ago.  they are probably long goen now :(
- By Carrington Date 01.02.08 14:17 UTC
Yes, it was the Glen of Imaal that I saw recently in the newspapers. Not a breed I was aware of beforehand, the Dam was gorgeous, all the pups were black though, shame there wasn't a mix. Hopefully the newspaper article will help to bring them back into cirulation.

I'm very surprised about the Dandie's numbers dropping, my Aunt used to have one, must admit I haven't seen any since, you would think they would still be very popular due to the Dandie being a low shedding breed, small, very few ailments, good sturdy breed, am I advertising it enough!! :-) and also it is a very pretty dog.

It would be nice to see some of these little terrier breeds back, great little family dogs.

Advertisment over! :-)

I think the glaucoma problem in the breed puts many people off breeding from their dogs??
- By Kasshyk [gb] Date 01.02.08 15:45 UTC
Aren't Glen of Imaal born black and their colour changes as they age?? May be confusing them with another.

Quite likely as many breeds pusp are born black or dark adn chage, my breed that is the case.
- By Kasshyk [gb] Date 01.02.08 16:47 UTC
Hi Barbara do you have any before and after pics? My litter were all registered @ 6wks as their colour at that time but they are all different now. The choc/white parti is now brown sable/white parti and the solid choc is now sable. There were no darker hairs in these when registered.

Brussels Griffon are such a cute and wonderful breed.  Its hard to remember all the breeds out there, and I to am guilty of not knowing them all, but normally I just smile and nod.  Incase of risking offending someone that has a proper breed, just one I have never heard of.

Brussels Griffon, come in both wire and smooth coats, and for some reason, I always think the smooth ones, especially the pups, look like pugs.  Horrid to say, I know, since they are totally different breeds, but you dont see the smooth coat Griffons here, and its just the closest breed that you can think of is the pug - I admit I am not to familiar with pugs.

Oh, we in Canada, do not call them the name you do in the UK.  They are recognized and registered as the Brussels Griffon.  I have heard of the name you have mentioned, and seen it before, but it isnt used in America as the breed name.

i'm trying to convince my flatmate to get into dandies when she eventually gets a dog. she likes them so i;ve been encouraging the attachment, lol. they need as many responsible peole interested as possible!
- By Astarte Date 03.02.08 11:44 UTC
i think dandies look like little grumpy old men (this is a good thing, they are very cute). its the mop of hair on the top of their heads, like a wee toupee. i always feel they should have little old man names (or very traditional ones) like angus, george or bertie...sorry, i have strange notions about the 'right' kind of names for different breeds lol
- By Brainless [gb] Date 03.02.08 11:53 UTC
I must admit one of my former pups (now 13) is called Georgina, doesn't seem right for an Elkhound somehow :D
- By Astarte Date 03.02.08 12:09 UTC
lol not really. the names you have for yours really suite the breed. for the bullies we've always avoided cutesy names so ended up with Horatio, Chadwick, Kismet etc they just suit big sounding names i think... my auntie always has biblical ones for her boys (Soloman, Lazerus-apt as he was resusitated as a pup), when they had frenchies they had sillier names (bilbo baggins etc). obviously depends on personality as well though...

Well I got Cher, and her brother is of course Sunny.

My sister has a couple cats, now this is a funny and odd story about names.

Her first cat, she got just after she moved out, since she was lonely and a bit sad.  Well she got this cat from the SPCA and called him Zoloft.  yes, after an anti-depressant.  She said it was because he lifted her spirits and made her a bit happier.  Well, my sister works, and when she was at work, she thought Zoloft would be lonely and sad.  So she adopted another cat.  Celexa.  Again, named after an anti-depressent.
Then, she took in my uncles and aunts cat, named Mickey.  He was a big cat!!!  anyways, always joked that my sister could take a Zoloft and Celexa and down it with a Mickey (which is a 10 oz bottle of liqour here).  LOL

When coming up for names myself, I first make the registered name I want, and then make a name from the registered name.
- By Astarte Date 03.02.08 15:29 UTC
lol those are great names! original and unique. i suspect when i start naming for myself (rather than with my parents etc) my fetish for all things to do with classical history and anciet religions (hense Astarte) might come through...
- By Gemini05 Date 04.02.08 14:18 UTC
steering back to my post!! Lol!!
I saw the lady today that I 'offended' and said sorry, she was fine about it LoL
I told her the UK name for her breed and she was very interested to read up more on the breed, hers is a rescue dog, she had a lovely pic of him with her today!
- By Astarte Date 04.02.08 15:04 UTC
awe see thats nice. there one in a film called as good as it gets i think. they are sweet looking things.
- By pugnut [gb] Date 04.02.08 17:48 UTC

Yep, with my breed I love old fashioned names. With mine its Daisy, Edith and Gwen(purely coincidental Gwen, but Im sure you wont mind!) for the p.o.l bitch were keeping. Previous pups have been called Lily, Wilbert and Dolly, all very suitable names IMO!

:-)
- By Astarte Date 04.02.08 18:23 UTC
lol, such puggy names! i particularly like wilbert!
- By Paula20380 [gb] Date 04.02.08 19:52 UTC
I agree about names suiting certain breeds and personalitys!!! I can't imagine Winston being called any other name it just suits him down to a tee. We also have Shana(who people on here helped name!!) which was shortened from her registered name, Tonka who OH named and I'm slowly starting to love the name for a mastiff and also Bessie, her name just came to me and really suits her!!
- By Astarte Date 04.02.08 20:13 UTC
i think winston is possibly the best name i ever heard for a mastiff. also he's gorgeous :)
- By Paula20380 [gb] Date 04.02.08 20:15 UTC
He is indeed!!!!:-D

But so are the others too;-)
- By Astarte Date 04.02.08 20:18 UTC
yes they are, but i'm very taken with his lovely brindle, he just looks gorgeous.
- By Paula20380 [gb] Date 04.02.08 20:22 UTC
Bessie is brindle too but she is very dark, darker than Winston. Must get some piccies of her onto Photobucket!!!
- By Astarte Date 04.02.08 20:26 UTC
oooh please :) mastiffs are a possible again for the future for me. the rescue boy we had was possible the sweetest most biddible dog i've ever met despite his horrid start in life.
- By Paula20380 [gb] Date 04.02.08 20:32 UTC
Can't imagine not having Mastiffs around in my life. There is nothing like cuddling up with one of them or all of them!!!:-D

They have the sweetest temperements!!!
