Topic Dog Boards / General / Drinking/eating before sedation....?

Having our gorgeous lad's hips & elbows checked very soon under sedation.
Have received the paperwork etc but couldn't see any guidelines on there re feeding/drinking before sedation.
I guess he could have a later breakfast but should I limit his water before the procedure?

I have never been told to withhold water or food before sedation.

Hi Debs, are you going to see Mike Guilliard?  Last time we went we were told to withold food after 8 the previous night and let them have free access to water.

i would withhold food to be on the safe side, it depends on the level on sedation to be used, it varies from very light just taking the edge of, to a deep sedation almost similar to a general anaesthetic! best to be safe.

I'd limit the water too. Better safe than sorry.

Hi,
In my opinion, On the safe side no food from the night before, only a drink of water.
Just incase he felt a little sick or was sick, could be through the sedative or nerves.
It is better to be safe than sorry, it will not be for long.

You can throw up water, so limiting it would be on the safe side as far as I am / was concerned.

I am fully assuered that with the drugs used now there is absolutely no need to withold water.

Well all done and safely back home.  Fed him as normal yesterday evening but skipped his breakfast this morning and checked he didn't guzzle too much water.

His appointment was at 11am and all finished by 11.50am. :)

Radiographer commented on a "very nice pair of hips and elbows" YAYYY!!!!  :) :) :)

I resisted the urge to wink and ask what she thought of the dog's! :)

Very positive experience and would definitely use this excellent establishment again.

Just the wait for the scores now......
