Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / did they or didnt they...

Hi guys....

Just a little concerned after reading up on a few sites that my dogs might have been at it...

Shila, my female alaskan malamute is in season at the moment, and we have a male westie.
We got through her first season without any issues between the two dogs ( i was told from a few people not to get her neutered before her first season).

However, time flies and before i've had her done we're at season two already. I thought this was a little early, as she's only 10 months old. Anyway, today i put shila in the kitchen and left the travis the westie in the living room. They're seperated by a puppy gate that neither of them have ever escaped through.

When i came back down, Travis was walking around with a bit of a hunch back and his pride and joy trailing along the floor... definately not what i would have called in proportion for a westie :)

I've seen my other dogs excited before, but never in this full state... but then again, i've never had a bitch and male at the same time before.

Two questions, that i've had answers from on other sites, but still have doubts about.

Is it true that if he's in this state (fully exposed lol), it means he's mated with my Malamute already?
I can't see how, as the gaps between the poles on the gate are quite close together, and she's 2-3 times his height.

Question 2 : How long with it take my westies penis to go back to sleep :)

And finally, if they did get up to something... can i still get her spayed, and will this ensure no pups arrive from this?

Either way, they're both geting neutered. :)

Firstly, it is possible that they can mate through the bars, so keep a closed door (at least one ;-) ) between them at all times when she is in season. Though ti sounds more like he may have just got over excited, I'd still act as though he has got to her.

Secondly, yes, you can get her spayed if she is pregnant. Vets prefer to do it in between season due to the extra blood flow, but will do it under these circumstances.

Thirdly, he should be back to normal :-) by now, but watch out in case he does it again :-D

A quick inspection confirms that Travis is back to normal :)
Until he gets to the VETS next week that is :)

Thanks LindyLou.

you can also have an injection whih i had, but is expensive, so if you were having her spayed i would go down that route

Hi Linda,

Thanks for your relpy... I'm going to cough up the £140 and get her done... and the extra £80 for Travis :p

West Highland Malamutes.....  imagine that. lol

I would think he had mated something to be fully erect, dogs can only get this way by having something pushing their sheath back, they don't work the same way men do. However, it doesn't necessarily mean he mated your bitch. although that would have been possible - bitches can be very inventive. It's possible he got over amorous with a cushion or similar :-D I'd your bitch spayed to be on the safe side.

Not always Tigger2, a friends rather amorous GSD youngster was merrily humping my lurcher lad... and he got his bits fully er, 'out'.. and there was no penetrating of anything to push the sheath back... or my little lurcher lad would have let us know alllllllllllll about it i am sure >_<

Took a while for them to go back down, but all was well in the end. I would wonder if the OPs westie had been either humping a cushion or air humping up at the gate... or worse case scenario, Madam has laid down, butt to the gate and let him have a go...

I would be down to the vets for an injection to abort any potential pups, personally.

but rubbing up and down on his back would have the same effect - that's why I said he might have got over amorous with a cushion :-D

Licking himself whilst in an aroused state can have this effect too.  I know a male who has got himself in this state even without an in season bitch, though the resident bitch did have an infected cyst which was making his hormones think there was, he knew he wasn't to hassle his companion so he took himself off to a quiet corner :D.

Lol.. sorry should have said.. size difference (hyooooooooge GSD, tiny 19 inch lurcher) m;eant there was no contact at all!

Well this has been educational :-D None of my zoi, crested or collie boys have ever managed to get in this state without actually mating, obviously my well brought up dogs would never do anything like hump a cushion... and certainly they wouldn't lick themselves so much :-D

LOL , i know it should not have made me laugh so much but this thread did, it reminded me of one boy i knew who used to sit and air hump. He would sit so nice next to you and the next thing you knew he was at it in all his glory , never once leaving the sitting position. Funny what some threads remind you of .

One of my boys does without even going through the physical side of humping!!  He's sat there one second the next there's his little man!
- By Tigger2 Date 04.02.08 05:55 UTC
Isn't that different though Diane? Male dogs wee men do often appear when they're sitting, but we're talking here about the whole inside out shinanigins :-D
- By Brainless [gb] Date 04.02.08 12:20 UTC
Yes it isn't the wee man then (GSD always seem to show when sitting relaxed), more meat and an extra two veg ::)

Seriously though you have to keep an eye on a dog when this happens to make sure he doesn't get dry before thigns subside.  A bag of frozen peas can help if the poor dog is uncomfotably distressed.
