Hi

Could any of you that own boxers give me an idea of a daily routine for them  - I'm asking for a friend that is thinking about getting an exbreeding boxer girl of 5 years old...

thank you

By 5 years old Boxers are generally very laid back.  They are not commonly barkers so can fit in quite well to most life styles.

Most at this age will enjoy a good walk morning and evening.   They really love people.  They generally do not like the cold or the rain :-)

My biggest concern ( unless you know the full history of the bitch) is how socialised she has been? was she in the house all the time or predominantly in a kennel/run type environment?

I bought a young boxer bitch once at 14 months, previously I had always had them from puppies.   She was fine in her own environment but she and I were both shell shocked when I brought her into my environment.    She had been kennelled and although shown a few times she was not around people regularly.  She was unsure of so many things including men. Took about 3 months before she would walk passed a carrier bag. :-)    It took a long time and a lot of hard work. My husband struggled more that I did because she was always fine with me but untrusting of him to begin with. After about approx 1 year I would say she was really good.

Blue covered most things apart from, perhaps problems with the bitches gut. They can be prone to colitis so if she's ok don't muck about with her food.
I've had one returned to me who seemed very quiet and this lasted months until she decided 'everything was gonna be alright' and she snapped out of it overnight( well seemed like it!) I suppose she was depressed.
It's easy for someone with one pet boxer to come on here and say all Boxers are manic  ( mine aren't) or all boxers need miles of exercise (mine don't - they get stimulation) or all boxers love people ( mine DO but some don't). All are different so she needs to be treated as an individual.
I wish them good luck. 5 years old is a good time for a boxer.... just easing into a sensible middle age; easy to be with and hopefully starting to slow down ( a bit!!)

Thank you for this - I dont know the history of the one she is looking at - only that the rescue centre staff describe her as really lovely and likes to spend a lot of time in her basket - has shared her kennel with various other dogs and has been fine.  Also the rescue centre is quite a busy active one so hopefully she will have some confidence with people

I'm sure she'll be pleased with what you have said - needs to visit her now I think

I'd like to say that if they are given a good old blast each day rather than\aswell as a lead walk they settle much better and mine sleep pretty much all day.
I hope you will be converted!

Forgot to add but goes without saying really, give her 5 years of love in as short a space of time as possible.....make up for the poor start in life.

Yes if she is in a rescue as an ex brood (sounds like puppy farm throw out) she won't have had the TLC she deserves :(

I hope everything works out.  Let us know how things progress.

Yes definitely, hope it all goes well.  And see if you can sneak a piccie on too (I'm a sucker for that soulful, sad face!)

Poor little bitch :(

I'm glad there are people out there like your friend who are willing to take a rescue on.  Puppy farms drive me in sane!  Greedy people with no care for the dog in question. i hope the bitch gets the care and attention that is much well deserved.
Give her our best wishes, if she needs any advice I'm happy to help just PM me x

Hi
Any news on the adoption?  Hope it's all going well x

The boxer is still in rescue at the moment - being tested with small male dogs before a decision can be made. So far has only been tested with large male dogs.

She is  lovely looking girl though

I'll keep you posted,

Maxine
