Following on from the thread 'breeds other than your own' and a conversation I had at ringcraft, Do some breeds get on with each other more than others (other than practical considerations such as exercise requirements etc) Which breeds  get on ? My spitz tend to like other spitzy/larger breeds but don't seem to get on with terriers.

My Dobe seems to get on with all breeds, but he definitely loves Dalmations and Weimaraners in particular and they seem to like him - not sure if it is because they are a similar-ish body shape and short haired, or some other reason. There are a couple of Newfie girls round here that he was very scared off when he first met them :-D Think it must have been all the hair - he looked like a midget in comparision

my sisters whippet hates GSD's, no idea why, she's never had a problem with them. the similar shape thing might be a factor in breeds getting along better, the body language is the same where as two very different dogs might be confusing...like a bassets errect tail might be read wrong by a dog not used to bassets. not sure that made sense...ok, my breed are heavy chested and look slightly like they are leaning forward (same as bulldogs etc) so this might be read as being aggressive even when its not. hope that sounds better on re reading...

my GSDS hate border collies, theres a nasty one that lives at end of our street that has attacked them twice and at all other times barks constantly from behind the gate, they now will bark at collies in the distance, until they realise its not the the enemy lol. they like all other breeds, cant say any in particular more than another.

Interesting topic.  I've often wondered why my Border Collie boy gets on with my Yorkies so well.  I would have assumed he would play more with my Beardies, but he gets so excited playing with the Yorkies, he will pick one up and carry it up the garden.  I can tell him to 'leave' and he will - then they go back and ask him to do it again!

my old boy hated collies to...one got into our garden when he was about 6 months (his mum had come into season), it went for him, but my dad chased it off. tried again at her next season..chad had grown a bit. don;t think it ever tried again...

Now Norwegian Elkhounds and Border Terriers get on very well, both seem to ahve a similar outlook on life, no pushover but sociable etc.

A friend of mine has always had collies and her husband GSD's and she thinks the GSD's dislike the eyeballing of some taking it as a challenge.

My CKCS is not the most forward dog. She likes Weimies but doesn't like Labradors. She also likes dogs of a similar height - puppy or adult.

My lurcher hates GSD's, we used to go camping and on one trip another campers GSD lunged at him and frightend him, he loves all other dogs though.
My youngest bgv loves all dogs but my older bgv doesn't like any dogs bigger than him (apart from our Lurcher, LOL) but he's surprisingly gentle with smaller dogs considering how clumsy he can be.

Dogs tend to recognise dogs of breeds they know well (as well as their own breed) and often prefer them. For instance, when Z (Malinois, he's my avatar) was returned to me after a year, he kept staring at Border Terriers at training class, tail wagging. No other breeds were interesting. He'd lived that year with a Border Terrier as his best friend. My Papillons always get excited when they see Blenheim Cavaliers as my oldest dog is one, etc.

My Sussex Spaniels really dislike Collies there is always really strong eye contact between them. The Sussex seem to like my new addition though a Portuguese Pointer.

My miniature poodle dislikes bull type breeds. Think it's because he was attacked when he was younger, or possibly as someone mentioned, because they have quite an aggressive stance.
However lots of dogs seem to take a disliking to him even when he has done nothing!! Someone once said it's because he's all black and some dogs are threatened by black dogs????

My lot are suspicious of GSD's and it's something that's stemmed down from my first LM bitch, she always gave them a wide berth and it's carried on down.  Mia isn't 100% happy around giant breeds, she gets worried - she did get chased by a rather exuberant Great Dane several years ago so this might be part of the reason.

They give Collies a wide berth too probably due to the fact there were 2 highly aggressive ones walked on one of the walks we went on, in fact everyone gave those 2 a wide berth and their male owner had the same temperament too (Thankfully they've moved!).

Curtis isn't keen on black male Labs due to our neighbour having an aggressive one which almost hurdles over the fence when I pass with mine, it's now turned into a growling exercise through the fence.

Asti did have a thing for WHWT & Whippets, no idea why she just went all 'googley' when she saw them even in her dotage she would get all cocky eared and frisky around them.

The body shape and body language thing is rather important I think. My eldest boy is completely black and his tail is held tight against his back so tight in fact that we attended puppy training for 10 weeks and it wasn't until week 8 that everyone realised he had a tail they all thought he was docked!! He deosn't seem to be able to use his tail to indicate his mood and I think other dogs are confused. Being black as stated also affects this. My youngest(cream/white) whos 5 months has a thing about particolours in my breed. She loves border collies maybe because of this.

Anton loves small dogs, but adores pups of any breed up until about 4 months!  He hates Boxers and Bulldogs, I presume because of the noise they make when they breathe.

My dogs like any dog that is friendly, mason (male 2 years) loves labradors, i think its because alot of them are friendly and do play with him. He does look very intimidating when going over to other dogs, he towers over them ready to pounce in a play stance but he looks like he is on his tippy toes staring at them. If any dog tells him off he runs away asap. Alot of GSD's dont like him, and smaller terriers especially JRT think its because of his size.

He is very playful and loves to chase, very gentle when he plays with the pups and will allow them to get away with murder biting his ears and he is a softy when it comes to his ears. I have noticed when he meets other DDB's that they are very mouthy and wrestle play with there mouths, very funny to watch because they are all the same.
