This is only part of the advice

To be realistic Joe Public is not likely to go to the expense of MRI scanning their pet bitch for a ( hopefully) one off litter so the best we can reasonably expect to advise to the OP is that she waits and hopefully uses an older stud dog or if we're very lucky a scanned one.

We can't demand that people follow all the recommendations but if we can steer people in the right direction, by urging them to use older dogs, then at least that's something.
What you,me and even Joyce is prepared to do for the good of the breed won't cut the mustard whith a great majority of people who want a 'one off litter I'm afraid.

I believe the OP has two dog pups:-)

This is where again everything depends on how we interpret the original question - she may of course mean studding by breeding. It is so difficult to give difinitive answers to questions that can be interpreted in different ways and no doubt one of the main reasons trouble brews when we try!

In Response to Moonmaiden

why is it that you feel you have the right to comment/pass judgement on a breed/breeds that you know nothing about?

Thank you I was aware of that.
Unfortunately due to the new format it must have been unclear to you that I was, in fact, replying to Moonmaiden regarding the OP of the question we are discussing namely; the question of mating a young cavalier bitch

Note to self.....must try harder!

What breed is that then ? Not Border Terriers BTW as I have been around them almost as long as I have GSDs & it is a very old fashioned idea that bitches pelvis's "set" they don't & I know a game keeper who has been breeding BT's since before I was born ! & he's still working & he doesn't breed his KC registered bitches early as he wants to see if they can do their job well & mature naturally, before he breeds from the best & part of his livelyhood is vermin "removal"without chemicals

I understand with Parsons, litters are not taken early as once the bitch has whelped it can change her shape to the extent she cant be "spanned"

all the books i have on russells say the second or third season, i dont know much about russells, but i do know that being able to be spanned is for working puposes so surely that would mean for all working terriers not just the russell

I was told this by a breeder who shows her Parsons. All terriers are classed as "working" (in theory) and not all terrier breeds could possibly be spanned

i should have said terriers used for digging, my partner works terriers so i do know that its not possible for all terrier breeds to be spanned
