Picked up my gorgeous cocker puppy today, 11 weeks old, Maybe I'm expecting a bit too much but he is doing a wee about every 5 - 10 minutes when awake. He goes outside and wees and then come back indoors and does another after about 5 minutes, this has been going on most of the day. He did drink quite a lot to start with, so I'm hoping this could be the answer. Some bright spark informed me that spaniels are prone to this problem and are quite hard to get clean. Any thoughts or tips appreciated. I know its early days yet so am not worried but any advice welcome.
Thanks,
C.

Yep sounds normal to me.
The usual advice take out after sleep, meals, drinks and play and every half hour between.

Yes I've been doing all that but he must have wee'd about 30 times since lunch time. I wondered if maybe he could have an infection although he seems fine himself.
8 week old pups do pee constantly, they have absolutely no control over their bladders can not hold anything whatsoever so tend to do loads and loads of tiny wee's it just goes straight through them, instead of holding anything in their bladder at all and going every half hour or so. It will improve gradually over the next few weeks when the bladder control gets better.
It is best to keep doing the garden runs and to keep your pup in an area where you can clean up effortless. Laminate, wood, tiles and vinyl are all much easier so hopefully you have an area with one or some of these floorings.
I've never had a problem housetraining a Cocker very easy to train, so I don't know who gave you that information, just stick to routines of in the garden as soon as the pup wakes, as soon as he drinks, eats, or finishes playing. On top of this with lots of praise when he uses the garden, I always pop newspaper down on a night to help train the pup to go in one area as it will be a while before he can hold himself.
A lot of people are thrown by the amount a pup will pee, but it is perfectly normal, promise it gets better. :-)
clio 1 - perhaps a phone call to the breeder to check that the dog was doing this prior to pick-up might reassure you ?
Good luck !!!

Puppies do wee an awful lot but 30 times seems excessive to me I would try and catch a bit of urine tomorrow and get it tested just in case he has a water infection.

Hi,
I'd agree, while it's normal for 11 week old pups to be weeing lots, 30 times is excessive - I would be popping to the vets to check out for a urine infection just to be on the safe side.

Thanks everyone, much better overnight and this morning, he seems to be going about every 20 minutes so perhaps it was just being in new surroundings and everthing yesterday. Had a good night with him, didn't cry once. Thats him, not me!!

Not all breeders have water down for puppies...
Then when they move to their own home and get a water bowl they just drink and drink out of fun and exitement of it = lots of pee and often!
My puppys litter did have water down all the time but even then when our pups breeder put a fresh bowl down the whole litter would go and almost compete with drinking it so when Sasha came home she would drink as much as she could so nobody else gets it and then sit on the bowl or at least put her paws in it!
When ever we fill up her water bowl she goes and drinks as much as she can with a delighted face of "ooooh fresh water, must have a drink/swim!"!
I think she just likes water.
She definately drinks even if she is not thirsty and pees for the world too!
Can i ask- what is the reason that breeders dont put water down for the pups?

I cannot think of a single Reasonable explanation for not giving baby pups water, ours have a couple of inches in a heavy bowl all the time from being first weaned, correct me if I am wrong but the only reason I can think of is to keep any mess down...they do rather like to walk, sit, play in it but to my mind that's all part of the learning process for a puppy!!

Some breeders do not have water down, they just give lots of water in the kibble...
I personally do not think it is good for puppies not to have access to water, only reason I can think of is laziness and yes, to keep the mess down...
My baby loves water which is good as water rescue is on the books for her... especially seeing how much she loves water!
Her breeder did have a water bowl (=swimming pool) down for puppies and my girl was known to doggy paddle in the bowl from 4 weeks old, or just lay in the bowl...
Now as a big girl (a whole 5 months old) she has expanded her practising include not just water bowl but toilets and any little puddle of water :) including waterbucket my mum uses to mop the floors she has peed!
If she does not keep an eye on the bucket soon she has a Leo trying to dive in to it head first :).

I would certainly love to know as I certainly always have water available for pups from the time they start on semi solid food.
As far as I know so so all the breeders I know. It is one of the basics of dog ownership, water available at all times.
