Topic Other Boards / Foo / Paper or Paint?

Right trying to decide if with the hall, stairs and landing I repaper (already wallpaper on) or remove the paper and get it plastered then paint it????? any thoughts.

Any thoughts and if so any links of something you've seen and liked or better still done yourself.

Depends what you like yourself.
We have not long finished papering a customers house with something called Wall Doctor
http://www.grahambrown.com/us/store/walldoctor.html
You put it over the top of woodchip instead of tyaking it all off!!!
And yes it does work. We have done her whole bungalow in it over the last 3 years and it still looks as good now and stays on, as it did when we started 3 years ago.
It also depends on budget, as replastering will be expensive, but will give you the better finish.

Get rid of the paper, so much easier to keep clean when the dogs shake themselves.

I like the wallpapered look better than paint but we have paint as it's so easier as the last poster said.  Loads easier to wipe etc :-)

The only room we have papered is the kitchen and thats only the top half of the wall.

Another vote for scrapping the paper!  I have paper everywhere - every room, the last house owners did it.  It's an @rse to clean after my lot have shook all over it, but as it's thick textured it's probably helping the insulation a bit so I'm keeping it.  That, and it's easier for me to paint over than strip it all first (as I have no help and am doing the whole house!).

And I don't know how to do plastering :-P

I'd base my decision on my preference, my budget and the state of the current paper. If you like paper better then is the stuff you have now stuck on well enough to be papered over? Me, I'd probably still strip it off before putting new paper on but that's just me. If you prefer paint you might be able to get away with not having to have the walls skimmed. If the plaster sealant under the paper is in good condition you can wash the walls with sugar soap and paint over. I've been lucky with some rooms. Others have needed replastering. My large open plan living/dining room cost me 600 to have reskimmed.

Wish I had hears of it, as I ended up having to re-plaster the full hall and both downstairs rooms, and my daughter's bedroom as she hated the wood-chip.  Scared to death to remove it in my bedroom.,

It is good, IF you like embossed paper. The one with teh swirly pattern is the nicer looking one. But all are good :)
Cost about £9 a roll, but if you think of the hastle of getting woodchi9p off(and the cost of paying aomeone to do it!!!) It is the cheaper option!!!
I couldnt belioeve  how effective it is. I was dubious to start with, but it is brilliant :) :)

Oh no I wanted smooth.
- By Lea Date 26.01.08 19:52 UTC
I actually looked at this paper and thought, the way it is, it could be done in a smooth. I dont know if it is, but you cant see any bumps so I am sure a smooth woulld work, but I havnt seen a smooth one yet!!!!!

Will never use wallpaper again, Cats scratch it, sneeze on it, and dogs peel it off and shake mud all over it! :D Paint wipes clean.
