Ive just read in the dog paper that Joyce Stranger has died.  I grew up with her books, still have them in fact,  I read most of them whilst still at junior school, she was a fantastic author.

So sorry to hear this, I also have most of her books and they are books that you can go back and re-read. I met her once on a course she was teaching,-a very knowledgeable lady.
Which paper was it in please?

I loved all of her books both fiction and non fiction. I named my rabbit after a dog in one of her books. I think it was a belgium shepherd called Jack. I remember that one made me cry too. I still have a couple of her books around from when I was a kid "never count apples" is one and has been read several times. She was a great person and author and will be sadly missed.

The book about the BSD called Jack wasn't by Joyce Stranger but by Frank Walker. :)

I heard about Joyce Stranger passing away a short while ago.  Very sad.
We have a lot of her books.  I remember reading 'Kym' and crying my eyes out at the end.  My partner is reading 'Three's a pack' at the moment.
She seemed to be a very knowledgable lady with a real passion for animals.

Shows how long ago I read it then if I cant remember who wrote it but it was a great book but very sad when he shoots the dog.

I'm just re-reading Double or Quit at the moment, I recently discovered some following Three's a Pack which I'd never read and have been getting my OH to find them from all over the world!! I've got about 20 or so of her books probably, I think the Shire horse one (One for Sorrow is it?) is my fave. :-)

She was one of the very first authors whose books I read when I was old enough to graduate to the adult section of the local library :)

Oops, I mean Breed of Giants!

I have read quite a few of her books, but especially enjoyed the ones about her own pets. "Three's a Pack " and "Kym" are two of my favourites

Lucydogs.  I've got 'Breed of Giants' on the bookshelf, never got round to reading it though.  I'll give it a go later in the week. :-)

my favorite book was "RUSTY" by Joyce Stranger
i am going to read it again today although i know i will end up in tears....
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 27.01.08 13:15 UTC
"One for Sorrow" was a very accurate portrayal of what happened in the 1960s, and it got me so angry that it all happened again just a few years ago. The 'Powers That Be' had learned nothing.

Oh a name from the past! I saved up all my money to buy her books as a kid ...I must have read heaps of her books..and certainly all her border collie and GSD  stories!  I had to chuck them when I left home cos my dad wouldn't store them for me cos I had so many. As a child almost all my canine companions were the creations of Joyce Stranger! What a wonderful lady. Being a late reader I never liked to read the books in school because they were so boring they told me nothing worth readsing. But I found FLASH at the library...it was one of the first books I read and after that I was hooked!  And after that I was going to have a border Collie called Flash when I grew up.

I was (and still am) a bit of a fan of Joyce Stranger, in fact 'Two's Company' was the book that I think really sparked off my interest in dogs when I read it as a teenager.

I also found 'One for Sorrow' quite a sad read, as several of her books are, which is what I think makes them so good as her fiction is very 'real'.

I still have all of the books, I may have to dig them out for a re-read.
